Has anyone used a Group 51 battery?

The stock size battery is a Group 25. I was curious if anyone used a group 51 and has pictures of it installed. I’m trying to regain some room to the right of the battery but don’t want to sacrifice reserve battery life (with a super tiny one like the Odyssey) or deal with relocation of the battery.

I had one for about 2 years, they dont sit in the battery tray perfectly, but they do work just fine.

Reason it only lasted two years, was because it was a leaky SOB.

Why wouldn’t they fit the tray? They’re a lot smaller than the group 25.

Have not used one myself but did had an opportunity to ask one of the competitors at this years Knox Mountain Hill Climb about his Staab group 51 batt.

I was surprised he was using such a small batt. in his 91 CRX with a high compression 1.8L LS swap, in a car that is purpose built for solo 2 and hill climbing, very short runs.

He said he has had the batt. for 3 years and has never had a problem cranking the the engine, even repeatedly when he has had engine problems

Sorry did not see the model but CA was 530 CCA was 450 and RC was 70.

I was interested for the same reason, looking to gain a little more room for my 94 LS build. 94

Thanks. I think I’m gonna give the wife my battery and get a Group 51 for me. I plan on moving my transmission cooler via a backet that goes next to the battery brace. I still need to figure out some spacing issues and I’ll probably get a thermal shield for the battery just to be on the safe side. I may also have to route some ductwork to get some airflow up there.

It should be interesting

please post pictures when you get the battery in, I want to put a smaller battery in as well but keep the factory location. i need something within the next week, not sure if you will be done by then or not. Thanks

hey man any luck yet ??

No I’m still researching everything. I will post pix as soon as I decide on something.

I went into Walmart yesterday and happened to stop by the automotive center. I grabbed a group 25 and a group 51 and lay them side by side. I took a pic with my cell phone camera to get an idea of the size difference.

These were Everstart batteries. Both were $65

Group 25: 540 CA, 450 CCA
Group 51: 520 CA, 435 CCA

The group 51 batteries were used on late 90’s Civics.

Neil I can tell you right now you will not have any problems running that battery. Also if you want an even smaller battery that will still deliver the same performance you can look into the stock Miata battery. If my memory serves me right with that battery you would need to change the battery polls as they are smaller.

Thanks for the info on the Miata battery ! I’ll look into that one too.

thanks for posting the 51 picture. what I will do is buy a 51 group from honda ( they sell it for 69.95 next door to me ) and then see if it will fit in the factory tray and what I will have to do to use a tie down I dont think i still have the factory tie down anywhere.

i have been using a group 51 battery out of a DC for the past 3 years with no problem, just only once when it froze up in -20 weather for 3 days :(… save more space and ligther then the bulker, heavier da battery… i give the group 51 a  in our chassis…
