So i did a compression test on my motor the other day and it came out 115 across the board. i have come to determine that my rings are pretty much gone.
I have another engine in my garage from an auto teg w 80k on it. but here’s the problem. with this motor, i pulled the head almost a year ago and took it to a shop to have new seals, cleaned and decked. it sat on my bench for about six months, as i waited to aquire parts for the block.
one day i decided to just swap the motors for a track day that was coming up. so anyways i get to getting back together and come to find a stud busted off in the head for one of the cam holder(cam seal to be exact.) after trying to extract it and busting off not only one, but two easyouts in it:bang: i relize obviusly im not going to make to the track and gave up, and decided to just wait.
I aquired another head from a trade with another former member from hear and that leads me to my question.
I want to pull all of the new seals out of my bad head and after cleaning the good head im going to put them in there with a fresh decking.
Now onto the head gasket. I tightend the head down to factory specs, but I need to know if i can still use this head gasket when i switch head. or do i need a new one.
the motor was never started obviously and i have only turned the crank by hand no more than 20 full turns.
BTW this is a NEW oem headgasket im talking about.
Forgive the obvious question, but why didn’t you just take the head back to the machine shop and have them extract the broken screw? That would seem to have been faster & easier than getting another head when you already had this one rebuilt. Also  on them for not checking all the bolt holes in the first place.
As for re-using a head gasket… never tried it, but I know I have seen guys do it. You can probably get away with it, but I would keep a very close eye on it once you put it back together.
I didnt take it back cause it sat on my bench for six months, with me not being able to prove anything, it just wasnt worth the pain in my ass. belive me it was a whole nother issues i wansnt pleased about.:werd:
I actualy just talk to a guy im going to take the head to tomarrow and see if he can pull it out. he said like $30 for the work and shouldnt be a problem. which is better then the new shop i have heard about. after talking to a lady at this shop its another $100(cleaning, resealing and decking) plus the new valve seals, cause they wouldnt be able to salvage them is more than i want to spend if this guy can fix mine.
but I still have the gasket issue. its not that i dont have the money for it, but if i could spend that amount of money on something else, I would perfer that:shrug:
Machine shops have a lot of practice removing broken studs and wouldn’t charge that much, that’s why the previous poster said to take it back to them. As for the head gasket, with my limited experience, I would reuse it.
Many will disagree, and I am not going to tell you what to do, but will give you my personal experience. I had to pull my head at 250K miles to remove a bent rod. I reused the 250k mile headgasket, yes, 250K miles on it. It has been perfect ever since. I am now at almost 305K miles, and my car runs and idles perfect, perfect temp, and get 30 mpg average mileage. Driven daily. Long live the B-series.
Racoon, what do you mean change it every other month? I didn’t have to change mine, so there goes that theory. If it does fail, and you change it, then you install a new gasket, so it should be good for the life of the engine after that.
so after talking to my mechanic of almost 5 years who works for acura as a service tech. and he told me that Honda/Acura says that you can use the gaskets up to 2 time. but in his oppinion to just spend the $60 or whatever and just replace it to be on the safe side and not deal with any headaches.
which is what i was leaning on doing, thanx for all the insight fellas:up:
