Head unit installation

I bought a head unit (Pioneer DEH2100) from a friend and I’ve already purchased an installation kit and harness. I tried removing the console to access the stock unit, but there were still some screws attached somwhere. What additional panels do I have to remove? If somebody has pictures, it would be really helpful…

Also, I’m going to replace the bulbs under the HVAC controls. What type of bulbs are they and where can I purchase them? Thanks in advance.

There is a screw behind the head unit. U can unscrew it with a short screw driver behind the center console.

there is a screw connecting the radio in the back, on the panel, it’s a black screw, usually people dont’ think to look there the stock radio is connected to the chassis, really good anti theft thing

mine has 2 screws back there… took me an hour to get em out and another hour to take care of the cuts and scrapes on my arm… kinda reminded me of the gauge cluster…

to remove the existing radio… its easier to remove all the trim panels. after u get all them off. i think there is 2 screws in the front and like silver bolts in the back. i used a socket wrench, 10mm? with long extension to get those 2 bolts off. after that the radio slides right out.

The easiest way to remove the hu is to remove the center console that surrounds the ebrake, etc. first and then the trim panel around the unit itself. However, it is possible to remove the hu without going through so much trouble…

If you get an 8mm socket and lay on your back (somehow) in the pass side (open door and lean in on a diagnol or be smart and remove the seat for more room if you’re a tall ape like me). Anyway, there’s a security bracket that the hu is bolted to behind the radio with 2 screws/bolts (8mm socket) or #2 phillips will do. Once you remove these two screws/bolts, the DIN pocket and the hu will slip out as one solid piece. Once these screws are loose, grab the pocket from the front and give it a tug. Yes… these heads are bracketed for secuirity reasons but I am sorry to tell you folks that it can be taken out in about 30s-1min with an 8mm socket (use a drill attachment if you want to save yourself some trouble).

I still prefer to yank out everything and give myself some real room to see what’s going on and to take care of proper wiring chores.

If you need some more detailed info with some very good pics, etc., our friends at www.install.dr can definitely help.

As a suggestion, get yourself some decent electrical tape (3M 33/66) and use a harness adapter to simplify your life. A good high output soldering iron or torch will bring a smile to your face when you see how much easier if becomes. I also suggest getting a package of wire ties to keep things organized and professional-looking.

You can do it. It’s no problem at all.
