I know it’s probably in the wrong forum, but I need answers fast!
My timing chain snapped, and i have everything waiting to replace it, but I can’t get the bolt that holds the alternator pulley off!!! I have tried channel locks and a breaker bar, and even a 130lbs impact wrench, but nothing!!! any suggestions, it’s a 93 LS, and i don’t think that the belt was changed since the car rolled off the lot…128xxx miles
in a scenario such as this when all else fails, this is what i do…
1>get some WD-40 or other penetrating spray
2>douse the **** out of the nut/bolt
3>let sit for 10-15 minutes to let it soak
4>use ratchet and socket on it to see if that helped, if not…
5>find as long of a metal pole as possible
6>stick the handle of the ratchet into pole and use it as one mo fugging breaker bar
i’ve always done that and it’s always worked, just depends how pissed off you are and how long the pole is HTH
there was no pinging when it happened, and i was coming to a stop, about 15-22mph or so, and the clutch was engaged because i was downshifting, and when i put the clutch in, is when it happened…
Get the dremel saw out! I couldn’t get this one nut off that holds the intake resonator in, so i dremeled around it and the thing came off like a charm. Of course this was due to rust, so it may not work as well in your case. This is probably a last ditch effort for you, just don’t go all the way through the nut, because then you’re screwed (no pun intended). But the dremel will probably end up workin to get the nut loose, but like i said don’t go all the way through! Still plan on getting a replacement nut though.
BTW, i got a damn nice polish on my washer after using the dremel
I just changed my timing belt, you don’t have to take that belt off right away. You don’t have to remove that bolt at all. First take off the AC and PS belts, then remove the crankshaft bolt, and the crankshaft pulley. After you remove that pulley, the alternator belt will just fall right off (in tact). The hardest part will be getting that crankshaft bolt off. I have some tips on that too. If you need them just let me know and I will try to post some pics. Let us know how your doing.
I meant to say the Crankshaft pulley! that bolt will not come off!!! We broke a 19mm impact socket trying to get it off w/ a 3 foot breaker bar!!! snapped it right in half, right down the groove…tried the blow torch, and still nothing, i really need your guys’ help on this, i need my car!!! it’s been two weeks sitting there, trying to get this damn thing off!!! and dremel is NOT a possiblity, at least not right now, but i’ll keep it in mind.

thx guys, keep it coming!!! [/B]
unfortunately it could be a very long day trying to get an old bolt off that crank pulley. mine required house air at the nearby shop (Dan’s friend let us use it for free) came off in literally 1 second.
O.k. I will try and get some pics of it later. First if there are 2 of you then have the other person get in the car and press down the break pedel as hard as they can then put the car in 5th gear if it is a manual, if it is an auto I would assume you could put it in drive. This will keep the bolt from turning. Then I used about a 1 and a half foot breaker bar on a 1 foot extention to get the bolt loose. It took me a great effort, but I weigh about 145 and I am not very muscular. Anyway you should be able to get it off then. If there are not 2 of you doing this, you can use your jack to hold the break down. Put one end of it on the break and the other end of it on the metal frame part of the car right above the pedel.(you will know what I am talking about when you look at it). Like I said I will try to get some pics later. I hope this helps.
well…here is what I am being told to do, buy 3 different mechanics at 3 different shops…my options are as follow, because i can’t afford to have it towed to a shop and back…
i can keep jumping on a breaker bar and see how many tools break and see if breaks the bolt loose…or strap the breaker bar on and turn the motor, and let the starter try to bust it loose. since the motor generates like 700 plus ft lbs of torque and see if the bolt breaks loose or breaks and just drill it out…i’m exhausted…
I haven’t done the timing belt myself, so correct me if I’m wrong. Isn’t the crankshaft nut reverse threaded? (you have to go clockwise to loosen counter to tighten?) Crap, I don’t remember.
You need to use a bigger inpact wrench. A 3/8" drive is insufficent for this job. Try and locate at least a 1/2" drive impact. For the air supply you may have to modify the hose on a portable air tank to hook up to an impact. If you fill the tank full it should give you the few seconds you need to break it loose. Something else, try not to use extentions on the impact wrench, this will cause you to lose some of the torque. Use a six point deep well socket to reach the bolt.
Here is what I do…use the Morosso wrench to hold the crank still…have it lock against the ground. Then I use the long breaker bar from Craftmans (this way if i break it I can replace it free) with an extension piece about a foot long (usually the arm from the 2 ton jack). Then jump away…the socket is usually the first thing that breaks, but from personal experience the cheapest 6-point socket seems to be best (I use a cheap made in taiwan socket).
snapped another 19mm drive socket, and a 19mm impact socket…chain wrench is on, bolt didn’t even budge…tried torching it, and still nothing…gonna try the N2O tonight, and possibly get the 1/2 tonight or tomorrow…thanks, i’ll keep you posted.
PSYKOTICCO, those pics would really help!!!
and i am correct in turning counter clockwise, right??!?!?!?!?
