[HELP!]After $600 Rebuilt Distributor, I lose LOTS of Low and High End Power??

hey all

after commin home from nite school a while back and the teg not starting up the next time, it sat there for a week or so, cuz w/ work, nite school, and day school, i had no time to check on it.

so my dad brought it into crappy tire, and it costed $600 to fix the supposedly bad distributor.

now we get the car back, and it pretty much literally takes 10secs to get to 60km/h :frowning:

whats goin on? even when i finally get up to 80km/h and try to push it to 100km/h, it takes forever, and the idling is around 500rpm or a bit more but under 1000 easily. Its also kinda rougher too, as in more rumbling :frowning:

what do you guys think could be the problem? :’(
i’m pretty sure it aint the tranny (auto) cuz i tried to use over drive to force gears to see if it’d help, and it didn’t at all :frowning:

could they have crossed plug wires?
or plugs aren’t firing? or miss firing?

plz help me, in desparte need here :frowning:

thanx in advance

Have you checked the timing? Since the distributor was removed, it needs to be retimed. You could have really retarded timing, which would cause a pretty significant loss of power and poor idling.

ic ic

now what would be easier, to time it my self or bring it back in and tell them they didn’t time it and its all messed up and make em time it fo me?

(given that i have no idea how to time)

thanx fo the reply

Look at your distributor, and look at the cap, if the cap is tipping towards the fire wall, then it is advanced, however, if it is tipped forward towards the front of the car, it could be retarded too much. Most likely though, yours is retarded a lot. If it is, take it to any place with a timing gun and advance it to somewhere around 16 - 18 degrees, I wouldn’t go back to that crappy tire place if they don’t seem to know what they are doing, unless they will do it for free.

*This has been edited because I got backwards on my information…thanks spikius for pointing out my errors.

Uh, it’s the opposite of what NtenseTeg said, if it’s towards the firewall, it’s probably advanced, if it’s away, it’s probably retarded, but the only way to know for sure is using a timing light. Pretty much any mechanic should know how to check and adjust the timing on the car. Look in the “Teg Tips” section for info on advancing timing, and it explains how to check and advance it.

If your noticing that much of a power loss, it sounds to me more like your time belt skipped a tooth. Did your old distributor bearing cease up? Mine did and when I replaced the distibutor, my timing was way off. HTH

thanx for all the replies guys…

hmmmmmmmm
well weird thang is that my dad brought it back to the place and they said the timing was ok already…

but i think i’ll try to recheck the timing on my own this weekend if i have time.

if it is ok… what else could be wrong??? :frowning:

eheh just had time to check this out right now
don’t have a timing gun to fine tune it yet, but i did it by eye and test drive.
and its much better now

not top notch but that’ll have to wait fo the gun, least its drivable

Thanx Again Guys For The Very Helpin Input
