What happened when you used the screw extractor? That should work, the same thing happend to my buddy’s engine rebuild. We used a screw extractor and it worked. What size drill bit did you use? 1/8 or 1/4?

the extractor i used looks kinda like a drill bit, it’s supposed to bite down on the surfact of the metal and spin it out, all it did was wear a hole in the exposed part of the bolt, are there other good methods out there? Mr Burns: what method did you use?

Did you drill a hole out first for the extractor bit? You should first drill out a 1/8 or 1/4 hole depending on the size of the bolt. I think you would want to use a 1/8 drill bit. First drill out a hole with 1/8 drill bit, then put your extractor bit in your drill. What size extractor bits do you got? It should say on the extractor set of bits which drill bit to use to start a hole for the extractor bit.

tried that, didnt work. I think these extractors i have are for stripped screws, like if you strip out a phillips screw or something. sigh off to sears to look for better extractors.

how bad would it be, to run the waterpump without that one bolt?

And now the extractor that i bought broke off in the hole i drilled in the bolt, so now it’s not just a broken bolt, it’s a broken bolt WITH half an extractor in it.

sounds like your having a rough day~! I wouldn’t run the water pump with that one bolt missing cause the vibrations will probably cause a leak down the road. When I had my new pump installed a bolt also broke off when taking off the old one, but there was no trouble getting it out with a extractor.

I’m about ready to park the car for a little while and save for a b18c shortblock.

cant rush these things i bet the bolt was muchroomed, meaning not flat, em adn my dad used lots of oil to work the bolt out, took a drill bit and drilled a hold in the center of bolt

used a bit with reversed threads adn it came right out, you cannot rush these things, it took him 10min to drill a hole in the bolt, hardly any pressure

there is a hole already in the center of the bolt…with a broken off extractor in it already, I called a machine shop, and even they told me there isnt anything they can do. about the only thing to do now is find someone selling a bare b16a block, or rebuild my LS block for ls/vtec

ok, if worse comes to worse take a bolt to a bolt shop and get a bolt that is the same length but one size bigger dia. now go buy a tap and appropriate drill bits and put a slightly larger bolt in it. may have to open the hole on the water pump a tad so the bolt will pass thru it.
