hello, everyone, i have a problem concerning my car. i have a 92 gsr, and it has a really hard time starting, well sometimes it does. sometimes it starts perfect, like after it has been driven, and sometimes it just won’t start, it will just make a “click” sound. motor doesn’t turn or anything. but then when i jump start it, it starts right away. i have just bought a new battery and the starter has been checked and it is fine. what could the problem be guys? bad ground, corrosion in the wires? any help would be much appreciated. thank you all.
do you HAVE to jump it before it starts?
if so that more then likely would be a short somewhere (or just something left on) drawing power from the battery constantly and makeing it weak after sitting for a while
alternator, or belt.
what belt? the alternator belt? how can i check if it is not good anymore? yes i do have to jump start it, sometimes. but after a drive, it starts up good within hours after being driven. and if not driven for like 5 hours i would have to jump it again. thanks for the help so far. i appreciate it. any other comments welcomed. thanks again.
if you hear any wining from the belts, or if there is lots of play with it. to check the alternator, a local auto store should have a tool to check it. or you can with a multimeter
Check the alternator. Same shit happend to me.
what happened after you checked your alternator? did you replace it and fix the problem?
Yeah if you jump a dead battery and then drive on it, you force the alternator to use power to charge it back up, it’s actually very hard on old alternators and will cause them to go out (I know from experience). If you hear a high pitched whining noise while driving - even with all lights, radio and acc. off, it’s your alternator.
the battery holding a charge for 5 or so hours, and not dieing while he’s driveing shows his alternator is more then likely working and it is likely another cause such as a draw on his battery from somewhere
getting the alt checked is always a good idea but from the sounds of it i dont think thats your problem
thanks guys, i am going to have my alternator checked asap. when i drive i don’t hear a whinning sound. oh yeah, it doesn’t seem like the battery is dead. all lights and radio still work. the motor just won’t turn till i jump start it? i might try switching out the power battery cable. it might have been corroded.
all the lights and whatnot can still work when there isnt enough power to start the car
