i got an emissions test done on my 90 LS 5-spd yesterday, and i failed “pretty badly” according to the guy who did it. the results of my test are as follows:
HC PPM: Idle-203 2500 RPM-138 > PASS (limit is 220)
CO%: Idle-0.35 2500 RPM-2.76 > FAIL (limit is 1.20)
CO2%: Idle-13.1 2500 RPM-12.2 > (didn’t say pass or fail)
This is kind of what the chart on my receipt looked like. It says when the CO readings (which is what i failed) are high, it means the air/fuel mixture is too rich. For the equipment inspection, my catalytic converter, fuel filler restrictor, oxygen sensor, and check engine light all passed. Does anyone have any ideas how I could get my car to pass? Any help is welcome. I’ve been driving around with no plates so I really need to pass this test!
Oh, one more thing. I heard from my friend that if your car fails emissions, the government will pay for whatever you need to make it pass. He said some guy with a WRX did this and used the money to buy a Haltech E6K engine management! Anyone hear anything about this? Thanks!
Even though you mentioned that your catalytic converter checked out, it is indeed your cat. Replace it and you will pass. I replaced mine last year and it idled like a new car.
so if it is my cat, should i just buy a new stock cat or just go ahead and get a high-flow or something? i know high flow ones run about $200-250 right? is it cheaper to get a stock one?

with a 14 for HC, and .02 for CO
but I failed IDLE
152 for HC
.97 for CO
any ideas why I failed the idle [/B]
That is a faulty catalytic converter or O2 sensor. They usually go hand in hand.
The O2 sensor will start spitting out more fuel because it is telling the computer that it is not getting enough and the cat gets so overworked that the excessive fuel destroys it.

sounds like a faulty cat then.
Anyone know how much a high flow cat cost.
Seems like all my problems are coming now
need new tires, new cat, new brakes and rotors, new cv joints [/B]
You can pick up a catco direct fit cat for around $110 shipped. That is what I did. I just havent installed it yet.
I just contacted AHmotor.com today and they quoted me:
“Genuine Acura converter= $538.95
Random Technology performance converter= $295.00”
That sounds extremely high! Napa quoted me $110 for a “oem replacement.” Whatever that is. I supposed I’ll go that route.
I recently failed emissions in both CO and HC. It seems odd to fail in both categories since each are associated with different conditions (ie lean vs. rich). BR and I tuned my ride last weekend and the plugs indicate a good af mixture which led us to believe that my cat is problem. Does anyone here agree with this logic?
