Help me identify this black box

When I turn the key from “ON” to “START”, halfway there I’ll hear a buzzing sound from behind the stereo/passenger glove box. If I hold it halfway there the buzzing continues and if I turn it all the way the car starts up fine and the buzzing goes away. I hear this buzzing sound about 90% of the time. I did a search and from the results it sounds like it’s coming from the starter relay. The odd thing is the car starts up flawlessly.

I took out the stereo and the glove box to locate the sound and it appears to be coming from a black box labeled “Made in Mexico” that is not the starter relay. The starter relay is more on the driver’s side. I looked through the service manual and wasn’t able to find anything about this black box.

The buzzing sound is driving me nuts! I attached 2 images of this black box from below the passenger glove box and 1 from where the glove box is located. Hopefully someone knows what this is…

i have a feeling that has something to do with your heater/ac… correct me if i’m wrong, just putting my two cents out here…

If that is a copper tube coming out of it and going into the heater box and if it has two blue/red wires going to it then it would be the A/C thermostat.:hmm:94

Thanks stealth_DA9 and fcm for the quick replies. I was starting to think it was part of my Viper alarm as I had one installed with power locks 3 weeks ago.

I unplugged the AC Thermostat and the Radiator Fan Control Module and the buzzing persists. Could this be the starter relay?? I hear the 3 clicks and the car starts fine a week since the buzzing started.

Any suggestions? lol…

EDIT:

I tried disabling the Viper alarm by removing the fuse and the fuse for the power locks and the buzzing persists.

I tried not engaging the clutch while turning the key and there is no buzzing.

The starter relay is located on the right side of the heater unit.

What color are the wires going to the “box”?

If there is a small gauge black/blue and black/white lead and thicker gauge black/red and black/white leads then it is the starter relay.

From where are you taking the pix?:hmm: 94

It was the starter relay afterall. I disconnected it and cleaned out the contacts and everything has been working great ever since. I’m not sure what caused this whole issue but everything has been working as it’s supposed for the last month. Thanks again FCM and stealth_DA9!
