So ive never done much body work/paint in my life. I have a set of black JDM folding mirrors that I took off my totalled teg. I now own a white GS and I want to put the mirrors on it.
Whats the best way to paint a sideview mirror? How do I get the paint behind the mirror? What sandpaper should I use? Should I primer them or just paint? I have the bright idea of masking off the mirror portion and painting them that way but any insight you guys have before I start would be great.
if your town or somewhere local has a vo-tech school with a refinishign program take them there, and all u pay is materials, no labor. at least thats how it is where i go to tech for refinishing. mirrors are harda s shit to paint IMO.
Sand them down with 500 grit sand paper, until there is no gloss left, make sure you get everything, all corners and creases. You will have to just tape off the mirror, because there is no way to disconect the wire on the back of the mirror, without clipping it, but you should still be able to get them pretty good. You should then spray them with sealer, let it sit for about 1 hour, then paint.
Make sure you clean them very well before you start sanding, with Wax and Grease remover, this will ensure you wont smear any contaminants into the mirrors. Hope this helps.
So ive painted them, and they came out great BUT, now my left side one does not fold correctly. It did fine before the paint. I thought it might be built up paint but everything looks clean and clear. Its like its not regulating power correctly. Sometimes it will fold quickly then slow like its tightening up or something. Then you can wait about 30 seconds and try again and it will move normally for a while. The right side works just fine.
Really weird and its bothering me so bad I just took em off and put em back in my room. Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to dismantle them?
