ok, i replaced the cap/rotor about a week ago, no me car isn’t firing right, i changed the wires cuz they were burnt and i changed the plugs cuz they were oil fouled (bad rings) and it still won’t work right, in the morning the car will start and run fine but when it starts to heat up it starts missing and finally stops firing on the number one plug (closest to drivers side), then the problem works its way to number 2 and then the whole car wont start, the plugs are wet once they stop firing. has anyone ever had this problem? is it a sensor or the coil or what?
I believe there are grommets for the plugs that will stop them from getting wet, try doing that. Did you say your plug got fouled again? That’s probably why it’s missing…idk
no when i say wet i mean that theres gas getting to the cylinders but the plug isn’t firing to burn it, the plugs are fine, its wierd, if the car has been sitting i can go start it fine but if i let it run for a couple minutes it starts missing on number one, like not even firing, theres no power even going to the wire, then the problem moves to another wire, i can’t realy tell which one cuz the motor doesn’t run long enough to check, but i know that everything from the rotor to the plugs are brand new, less than a week old
my man first do a compression test, both dry and wet since you said the rings are bad…maybe not enough compression to ignite, thats why the foul plug. you might also want to check the spark plug wires, make sure you put the right plug in the right cylinder…also make sure you gap the spark plug right. you said you burn your plug wires, which cause your spark plugs to go foul… i think your distributor is going out. is the check engine light on?
Do you have to wait for your car to cool before it’ll start again?
How is the distributor? They have a tendency to go bad on these cars. I would say look for codes right now…I got a 15 when mine was going bad, but the prob with mine was it’d randomly stall the car on me and be hard to restart. But it almost sounds like it could be your problem, as it’s in between all you replace and the plug wires…?
Is that true? I drove my car for 5 years without a distributer problem, suddenly I’m experiencing distributer hell.
Is what true? Umm…everything I said happened, yes…
what would go bad on the distributor the electronics in it or what? i can’t figure out how to pull codes i have a 91 and i connected the jumper that my chiltins said to but it doesn’t show anything. and everything from the cap/rotor to the plugs/wires are all brand new and gapped right, would the distributor be the reason that its not firing? i did have a problem with the car stalling a while ago before i changed the cap and rotor (i managed to throw a wire off the cap and crack it) but about 2 months ago i was just messing around and wrapped up in 2nd, threw it to 3rd and when i dropped the clutch the whole car died, i just pushed the clutch in and started it but it did that a couple other times too, just driving along and it would die, but it started right up again
arg no…you have a 91, all you do is turn the key to “on” and pull up the carpet and count how many times the red LED light blinks on the ECU…that is what is nice about obd0!!! Then find a code list on here. Usually its the ignition coil or the ignitor, but people tend to replace the whole distributor.
do i need to pull the kick plate off of the ecu first or is there a spot you can see it, is there any way to check the coil?
also, on another note, what part of these lights lights up for what reason?
On the 91 there is a window in the ECU where you can see the light blinking, just fold back the passenger side carpet. On mine the light just blinks and never stops. Let me know what yours does.
I mean is it true that the distributer has a tendency to go bad on these cars? Are a lot of people having problems with them like I am?
Yeah I see threads about it all the time. I’ve had 3 DAs and only had a §§§§§ prob in one of them but it wouldn’t surprise me if it happened again.
I just went through distributor hell.
well, i managed to thaw my car out of its shell of ice (freak ice storm) and tried turning it over, i took a couple of trys but it finaly caught, it ran normal then withing a couple seconds it started missing and sputtering, then it totally stoped firing on number one again, i tried checking the light but it only flashes for a split second when i turn the key to on, now that i think about it it does kinda sound like the rings are gone, i.e. no conpression, damn, i still got 2 months till taxes for a jdm crate. again can anyone tell me what lights do what on those tail lights i.e. brake, signal, tail, that kind of stuff, also what about the halo style, what does the actual halo light up for or is it a seperate circut?
Well I would think all the red on the bottom lights up or at least that center one, for tails. The reflector seems to be in the middle of the all red one. The inside clear would be reverse light, and the outside clear would be turn signal. That’s my guess, I would never ever buy those tails, they are ugly as hell, but I would figure they’d have the same concept as stock.
can someone describe how exactly to do a compression test, i don’t know THAT much about mechanics yet
ok it’s been a while and i got curious so i started my car again today, it had a little trouble but it has been sitting for a while, it started right up and ran great so i let it sit and idle for a while, it warmed up to normal temp and then started again but this time it was an ocasional miss and shit then when i touched the gas it would act like it was flooding and try to die, but if i let it catch itself and then touch the gas again it would rev like normal. i was like wtf so i opened the hood and used my hand to turn the throttle and it did the same thing. but i could hear this wierd chinking down towards the battary so i put my head down and follwed the sound to the distributor that sounded like the bearing was non exhistant. would that be the source of all the trouble is a shot bearing in the distributor?
