help sunroof glass flew off on freeway!

I was driving on the freeway and the sunroof was closed and all of the sudden I here this loud noise come from my car like I hit sumthin so i pull overe and nothtng seems wrong with the body…until i looked at the sunroof… everthing is still and the motor still works its just that the glass is missing… my question is what kind off glue would i use to glue it down? it has some gummy black stuff on it but its not very sticky any input to what kind of glue i should use?

Damn… that’s the first I’ve ever heard of something like that happening… must suck if the glass hit someone driving behind you .

Can you post a picture? Are you sure it’s an OEM sunroof? Our sunroof glass is not glued in place, it’s a unit which you can bolt/unbolt from framing that sits above the headliner. There may be some pieces glued to the glass itself, but you don’t install a new one using glue (typically automotive glass is installed using a “urethane” adhesive, look for 3M Window Weld).

yea i will take a picture in the morning and post it… so are glass is not glued in at all? thank god it didnt hit nobody tho damn that would have sucked

  1. The glass is motorized, if you glued it to the car it wouldn’t be able to move.

  2. The glass and motor are held to the car using a very big “bracket” for lack of a better term. This “bracket” bolts up to the bottom side of the roof metal and holds the roof in place.

  3. The sunroof shouldn’t easily come out through the top. It’s slightly larger than the hole in the roof so that the whole assembly seals properly.

Here’s a picture:

Like I said, there may be some parts which are glued to the sunroof, then these parts attach (with bolts/screws/clips…) to the car somehow. Or it might just fit into place in the larger “bracket” or be sandwiched in place. Remember, the sunroof moves back and forth when you open and close it, so it’s not solidly mounted to the body. I forget the exact method by which it attaches since it’s been about 6yrs since I removed one. Maybe someone else can chime in.

so then how does fig 9 stay in place 10 and 11 arent what hold it in place are they?

before using any make sure the surface is free from previous adhesives… its all about surface contact… at your local napa or advance should have type glass “glue”

g/l

Same thing happened to me in my fiances Isuzu Rodeo. We had to end up buying a whole new glass with frame to fix it. What happened is that the glue that bonds the glass to the frame became weak causing the glass to fly off.

yea i fixed it the glass flew off the frame so i got a new frame with glass for 15 bucks lol

Wow I’ve never heard of that before.

HOLY SHIT!

That is unbelievable! I’m not sure how the hell something like that happens. Maybe it was installed w/ the wrong urethane  The urethane used to install auto glass is amazingly strong… it’s designed so stuff like this does not happen. Once its applied its nearly impossible to remove (you have to cut it to remove it).

I realize that this is an insanely old thread, but this crap happened to me too, so it wasn’t a fluke. I actually watched my glass shatter on the freeway behind me in my rear view mirror. Be careful about this guys, If it hasn’t happened to you already, I would go ahead and look into replacing the urethane glue holding these glass panes in place. Safety should always be a priority, this could get someone killed.

Being that I wasn’t aware of this thread and tthe pictures are missing… What exactly is coming apart?

Im assuming that the glass and the rubber molding around it is coming off the mounting points. If you haven’t seen the oem sunroof glass on our 2gen, then just imagine the door windows how they are mounted. The glass has two plastis/metal taps glue on to the glass. That’s the way it gets bolted down to the regulator frame. In the sunroof case, its a similar technique and once the glue on the mounting points isn’t strong enough to hold the glass down the glass part will fly off the car.

i sold one of my old tegs to a friends. same things happened on a country road…3 years ago in SC. it does happen.

You gotta be fucking kidding.
That’s some final destination crap.
Did you pick up the glass after, glass is going fly up in someone’s window and in their eye.

B’s aside glass must have broken off the frame. Dam I’m jumping in my flip flops and run to the garage to check my glass.
