I was wondering if anybody knows anything about speed sensors? My car is throwing a code 17 which is a speed sensor code and I have absolutely no clue what the hell that means. Help me out if you know anything… And don’t post one of those damn search signs, I have already looked.
Does your speedometer work??

Isn’t the speedometer driven by the speedo cable which is connected directly to the tranny? I’m pretty sure this sensor has something to do with the power steering(wheels easier to turn when going slow and harder when going fast)… Take a look at the helms manual… you’ll surely find a troubleshooting flowchart for this sensor… (the helms is available online from one member, don’t remember which one though)

Yes, the speedometer is driven by the speedo cable, that is connected to the gauge cluster. But the other end of the speedo cable goes into the speedo sensor which goes into the tranny and is spun by the speedo gear on the differential…
No, the power steering system will not contribute to this problem.

I didn’t say the power steering would contribute to this problem, I said that I think the power steering is in part controlled by that sensor…
ok, I have searched, looked at the helms, but cannot find where the speedo cable goes into the tranny. I only find the back up cable. Someone please help! My brothers cable broke while we were trying to reinstall some gauges. I am buying a new cable, but do I need to buy anymore clips or boots? Thanks, I am really confused on how to do this, when I reinstall cable, how does it get back to where the gauge cluster is???
if you have the time. pull the gauge cluster, and find the speedo cable. LIGHTLY tug on it to see where is exits the firewall and follow it to the tranny. when i replaced mine, it exited out a grommet that had a 90 degree turn and straight to the tranny.
Isn’t the speed sensor located in the cluster?
Code 17 is the speed sensor code. I just threw this code today. Did you recently do a guage cluster change or install some new face gauges. Just thought I’d ask cause I installed some indiglows and the speed cable in back came loose and that is how I got that code. Just reinstalled it made sure it clipped in. No more code. Just my .02…
I was getting that code as well. But it was because the cable disconnected from the tranny and it wasnt turning it. So you drive for like… 10 mins and then you get a check engine light. All i had to do was put it back in. If your speed tack isnt working then thats the prob.
well im having the same code, i swapped my cluster and my ecu and still getting the code what else could cause this code?
da9feen, you don’t need to make a thread and then bump an old one up…
Just to clarify: Post by B R above is misleading, the VSS is actually in the gauge cluster on second gen tegs (and also EF’s). The mechanical speed cable goes into the back of the cluster where it is converted into an electrical signal for our ECU. On THIRD GEN tegs and later, the VSS is directly mounted onto the transmission which feeds an electrical signal to both the cluster and the ECU.
Troubleshooting code 17:
- first ensure that the speedometer on your cluster is working. If not then check the mechanical speedometer cable going to the transmission. Check for proper and secure connection to the transmission and at the back of the gauge cluster.
- If the speedometer works, but you are getting code 17, the second step would be to check that the cluster works properly. Here is the procedure for testing VSS in the cluster.
Picture Summary, manually turn the cable input at the back of the cluster and test for continuity between the terminals every time you turn it 4 revolutions
- Finally, if the cluster works and the speedo cable is attached and working properly then check the ECU and connections. NOTE: The problem may also be a wiring issue (especially if you have had your car's stock wiring tampered with)!
your problem is the speed sensor. the gear teeth that goes into the tranny are made of plastic and get worn down. unbolt the one bolt for the speed sensor and take a look and the teeth. by the way you cant get the teeth part of the sensor by its selve. you have to get the whole sensor. and dont lose the horseshoe clip.
