Hey, Sherlock Holmes-how did my throttle plate get stuck open?!?!?

New problem today, I need some expert diagnoses:

I’m merging onto the highway, taking the engine up to 5500 rpm or so before each shift. Just as I shift out of second, the rpm’s rocket up to 7000 and hold there, bouncing off the limiter(my foot’s not even touching the gas pedal)!!

So I turn the ignition off and pull over on the shoulder. I check the throttle plate…it is stuck wide open…the throttle cable is totally slack. There is no obvious reason why the plate is stuck open. I apply slight pressure to the plate and it snaps back to normal position.

This happened 3 more times before I got home. It mostly seemed to be triggered by taking the engine above 3500/ 4000 rpm’s.

I finally parked in a remote area and purposely revved it. The throttle didn’t stick, but the acceleration is now “hitchy.” Most noticeably going up hills…it reminds me of when my O2 sensor went bad.

The check engine light is NOT on.

Any ideas??

Might be sludge and grime stuck in there…try getting a toothbrush (preferably one you’ll never put back in your mouth  ) and get some 02 sensor friendly Throttle body cleaner. Give the throttle body a good spray and scrub the inside with the tooth brush…and clean the plate face and backing (you might need someone to hold the throttle open for ya…don’t over spray too…you might damage the 02 sensor.

What is the useful life of the fuel pumps in the G2’s?
