My wife’s teg emits this very high pitched whine that seems to cycle with the A/C . It seems to originate in the engine bay first, but it’s very faint. Then that stops, and then you hear the loud high pitched whine inside the cabin.
Anyone have any ideas? I believe an expansion valve was recently replaced to see if that remedied the problem but it had no effect.
Well the compressor was “recently” changed – it’s maybe 3 years old? The noise only started happening about 8 months ago I think. But is it possible to lubricate it ?
The bearing for the compressor clutch (that the pulley freewheels on when the clutch isn’t engaged) is a sealed unit so I doubt there’s an easy way to lubricate it. If it turns out to be the culprit I would suggest just replacing the clutch assembly. I tried to locate a bearing by going directly to a bearing supply house but couldn’t find a suitable (read: affordable) replacement. It’s an oddball size and as far as I know it’s not available from Honda except as part of the clutch assembly. It’s also quite difficult to remove from the pulley. There are small tabs inside the bore of the pulley that retain the bearing, so it’s not simply a matter of pressing out the old one and pressing in a new one.
Check the bearing on the a/c idler pulley first though. That one is a readily available size. I bought a replacement for mine and had it pressed in at a shop. Could be an easy fix!
