Home-Made Short Ram Cold Air Extention

Hey everyone. I was getting pissed off about paying 60 dollars for Injen’s Cold Air Extention on my 20 Dollar Ebay Intake, So i decided to make my own, and ended up paying 13 dollars and some change. Heres the list of things you Need, Tools required, And a step-by-step. I will have pictures up soon when i get batteries for my Digi-cam.

Materials:
Short ram intake ( obviously  )
3" Dryer vent hose about 2 feet long ( has ajustable length, the 2 feet is compressed, uncompressed it is 8 feet . )
3" to 3" ID Rubber Coupling ( should come with two clamps )
A hose clamp about 3.5 Inches in diamater.
All are available at your local hardware store.

Tools:
12mm Socket
10mm Socket
Flat head/ Phillips screwdriver(s)
3/8 inch drive w/ 12 inch extention.
( If theres something I forgot, just post it  )

Instructions:

  1. Remove the front bumper from the car ( 2 12mm behind each bumper lense, 2 phillips screws in each fender well, one or two 10mm screws underneeth )
BE CAREFULL DOING THIS. DON’T DROP THE BUMPER!

  2. If you havent yet, remove the intake resonator ( 3 10mm bolts )

  3. On the passenger side of the car, below the hole where the stock intake use to go, is this ugly, obtrusive air tank holding…thing. This has got to go. Its 3 10mm bolts. All 3 are somewhat behind the ugly thing, but you can see them.

  4. Once you have the ugly thang off, remove the airfilter off your short ram, and set it aside. Cut the Dryer Duct to about maybe 19-22 inches long. Fit the duct OVER the outside of as much of your short ram as you can, and use the ramaining duct to run down in to the hole. Use the hose clamp you bought to clamp the dryer duct to the intake pipe ( to make sure there are no leaks )

  5. place one side of the 3" coupling OVER the outside of the outlet for the air filter. ( Trust me… OVER … Its a little hard, but will fit. ) Once you have this tightened, place the other side over the dryer duct that is ran down in the hole. For safetys sake I used a little duct tape to make sure there were NO leaks. I also placed a small something or another under the filter to hold it up from the bottom of the fender well somewhat.

  6. Replace the bumper oposite as of removal. If it dosen’t fit right, dont force it. You’l get it.

  7. Go for a test drive to make sure everything is snug.

  8. Enjoy your Custom CAI Extention and an extra 45 dollars in your pocket!!!

BEFORE:: With the Short-Ram intake I felt a slight kick in power from 4000 UP and a little more from bout 7 to 8. Vtec was High pitched and sounded over strung, and the intake was only deep at low RPM’s.

AFTER:: With the Cold Air Extention in, I felt a DEFINATE increase across the WHOLE power band. Torque increased amazingly, and when taking it for a test drive on the local highway enterance ramp, i actually got off it at 7,200 because it was pulling too hard.
Later taking it to 8,000 it it simply amazing. The best 13 dollars i EVER spent. VTEC is DEEP and AGRESSIVE sounding now, no more whiny over strung, and it pulls HARD to redline. The intake is MUCH louder and deeper at lower AND higher RPM’s. After driving for 30 minutes in 35 degree weather w/o the heat on, i popped my hood and the whole intake pipe was freezing cold. I touched it and it started to get foggy from the heat from my hands!

OVERALL: I reccomend this to anyone w/ a G2 and a short ram intake. Let me know what you think of my project

Hey this is a good idea and does work, i did it myself but i would recomend checking and replacing the dryer duct every so often. I used this method for probably a month and the dryer hose is so week in spots that little pieces of the metal had broken off and caused little holes in the dryer ducting. Causing little pieces of metal to fly through my engine, Wasnt the best thing for the engine i found out.
Just a Heads up.

i was going to reply the exact same thing. who knows if it actually got sucked up. so get that thing off asap and either use pvc/abs or metal. the only thing its good for now is maybe to funnel air in.

my friend who HAD a g2 said remove the front right bumper light (of corse not legal i believe) and air will get pushed into the short ram, as long as u take out the front intake pipe. i havent looked yet, but i did take out my lower box and front pipe today, so ill look tomorrow.

speakin of which, will someone tell me how to get that fuxxin front intake pipe outta my damn engine compartment…post another forum (or a link) or email me ibmfix@hotmail.com tnx

what about making something out of a PCV pipe? this stuff seems to be better then a dryer tube thingy, plus its harder plastic…i have a 91, and i got an AEM short ram, i was thinking about taking the black plastic thing out of the bottom of the bumper (under the turn signal) and trying to make the pipe suck in air from there…i dont know, if i ever get the time or what ever i will try it and put pic’s…its just an idea

Might I suggest using aluminum dryer duct instead of the cheap white kind. The have it at most home improvement stores, you just have to ask someone where it is.

You have to remove the bumper.

What do you think we have been talking about. You cant pull little metal chunks through your intake if u are using the white plastic ducting…

The white duct I am talking about has a metal coil in it. If I misread the post, I apologize.

i’ve done this quite a while ago. using the stock intake arm, and the ebay intake, being cut in several places to get the cold air. after i had this cai setup, i used the piece that was left over, to use in my VIS RS bumper cover to attract more cold air. RAM air…
here’s a pic of it.

(there’s a better pic of it, but i cant find it right now)
at a g2ic meet, when leaving to catch up with someone to bring them to the meet, david (chinaman34cents) said that it sounded very nice, had a nice deep tone to it, and was smooth.
