I have a question…i went to the junkyard today and found a 1990 volvo 740 with the turbo still intact, now if i get this turbo off will i be able to use the turbo for a starter kit or should i just keep looking for a better doner car with a larger turbo???
buying that is a crap chute. you don’t know the cars history at all. it could run great, or it could leak oil after 2 weeks. the turbo game is nothing to go cheap on. cheap doesn’t have to be crap though either. i paid $300 for a rebuilt t3, and so far it’s been great.
good luck, and read the turbo guide if you haven’t already.
WTF is that answer? Forged internals are not mandatory for a 7 psi kit. They are a good way to protect your engine for high boost applications, but the stock B18 are easily able to take 250+WHP without any problems. It’s all in the tune.
@driftahboi: Don’t know this turbo kit, make sure it’s not like SSAutoshit or one of these cheap kits.
yea that kit is one of the cheap ones…but dont go bashin the cheap turbos…i’m running one and that thing still hasnt gone to turbo heaven…just lucky i guess:angel:
You guys make me wanna boost too… I hear you guys talkin 200whp give or take with the ls, makes me excited to think about what a turbo on my gsr would do
you said the b18a1 motor can take a certain amount of boost on stock internals and forged internals would somewhat be a waste of time…what would be your opinion on a b18a1 with 275000 miles should do to prepare for boost?
@Shawn: My Teg got boosted last summer using my bone stock B18a1 with 265,000km (~165,000 miles) on it. No problems so far except valve seals that are shot, but they were before boosting. Mileage is not really an indicator, the shape of the engine is. Like my engine, it’s in pretty good shape so I may keep it this way for this summer. If your engine is starting to eat oil and has bad compression, a simple rebuild could do the trick. Of course, while rebuilding, you can upgrade some parts, but for a low boost application, forging the engine is overkill, unless your have too much money.
If I were you, I’d simply rebuild it to make sure bearings are good and i’d boost that lil sucka!
Beat’s me… No one running that turbo? its in my price range lol. greddy has them for like 2-3g plus installation maybe 5? i know a guy running a full-race turbo kit in his CRX SOHC_V… no tune whatsoever… its still running strong for 1 year… and he duznt baby it… he pounds da shit of that thing
and on the turbo kit…i run an ebay turbo and it hasnt blown because i’ve read that running an oil restrictor will save it from blowing the seals and so i took that into consideration and no trouble yet (knock on wood). manifold should be decent since its a standard cast with good wastegate placement. only things i’d be aware of is the wastegate itself, the charge piping, and the downpipe. although the charge piping does look similar to my setup, i feel like SOME custom fabrication would most likely be involved but thats just me. downpipe is definitely going to be customized by the looks of it.
but dont cheap out on the tuning though! you spend the money to boost your car then you end up blowing your motor…then what?
