Well i just bought a fiberglass hood a week ago and ive noticed that there are a few cracks along the side closest to the windshield, right on the rear lip. Its not very visible but im quite OCD about these things so…
how do i fix the cracks? I know the basic idea is resin and cloth but thats all i know. I was wondering if maybe someone could point me to products, maybe give a little more insight so that i will know what im doing a little bit better. Thanks!
I believe there are pre mixed gel/thin fiberglass products that you can just lay onto the crack, sand off and re-paint. Any autobody supply place or parts place should have a few of them to choose from. I always ask the paint and body guy what the pros use and go from there. Just ask him to explain the process in detail and normally these guys will talk your ear off about it. I was looking at one earler today that would probably suit your needs just fine. Cant remember the brand, but all I know is it was a pre-mixed fiberglass repair kit.
Hope that helps get you started.
NOTE If you search youtube under “fiberglass cack repair” or “fiberglass repair” i bet you will find more than one step by step video walkthroughs that may help you out as well.
Theres a couple different things you could do in that situation, I would do this, at least if i was fixing it.
I would just use a surface grinder to grind into the crack a bit and level the area, then get a product like he is talking about, many companies make stuff, i like Duraglass (USC product) but other companies make what they call “long strand fiberglass filler” its basicly a filler that is fiberglass and they work real good, But ull have to sand that and apply a regular filler over top.
If you have any more questions or anything man, hit me up on AIM bmkisbmx or shoot me an email bmkisbmx2@comcast.net, I actually live in Lancaster PA and I do alot of bodywork/paint work on the side, and would be more then willing to help you out,
Thanks
Brandon
