how do i make a JDM motor California smog legal???

Hi- i want to do a jdm swap, but I live in california and we have strict smog… Does anyone here live in cali and has done a jdm? well, if anyone has any info on what has to be done to the motor to make it pass, id appericate it.
thanks alot
steve

its pretty impossible to smog it without some type of hook up. now they have a visual check… and you won’t pass that unless the guy is dumb or doesn’t care. i suggest doing a smog test before your swap and just worry about it later. good luck. late

jdm engines are illegal-----thats pretty much the bottom line.

someone told me that if you can prove that it is EXACTLY the same as its usdm counterpart (ie: the b18c is identical to the b18c1) then you can do the swap.

basically i wouldn’t even try it—chance of you actually getting the BAR sticker is pretty much none.

if you plan on doing a jdm swap then plan on paying to have your car smogged illegally. If you plan on doing a usdm engine swap then plan on a big pain in the ass to get the Ref to give you the BAR sticker----note, it will be easier to get the BAR sticker if your car is 92-93.

I’m putting a b17a in my 91 within a year or so and i’m trying to prepare myself for smogging it. If i’m lucky then it will go smoothly, but i’m worried that the ref is gonna be very technical and go by the book----if so then its gonna be difficult and expensive for me to get it to pass.

Refer to this website… JDM engines are legal to an extent.

Go to the bottom for replacement engines.

one question: does the “emissions control equipment” have anything to do with the obd system?

i still gotta figure out this damned obd factor!!!

i say screw it. im from orange county and i am stationed in yuma az right now but i go home on the weekends. my tint is sooo pitch black all the way around and i want to do the swap. so im just going to register in az. cali registration was like 220$ az only 14$ and ins is sooooo much less. and for az you only have to register every 2 years. so you spend 400 plus and im going to spend only 28$$ now aint that the S***. dont know what to tell you.:stuck_out_tongue:
