how do i remove the climate control unit

im stuck here and its really starting to piss me off i can’t figure out how to take the stupid buttons (which aren’t even working) off because its stuck to the AC/Heater controls

If im not mistaken you have to remove all the bolts that hold the dash to the car and pull the dash towards you. The dash doesnt give you enough slack so that you can take the unit out. I have to do the same but i dont wantto go thru that hassle.

dash shouldn’t need to come out. there’s a screw holding the underside of the control unit to a bracket. looks like you’ve got the rest of the screws done, so that should be it. aside from the plugs, of course

That bottom screw should be it. TegTips has the article as well describing all the bolt locations.

where exactly is this bottom screw???

how do i remove those bottom screws?? the two under holding the bracket ive been trying to get them all day

Half sized screwsdriver through the radio area I believe. I didn’t take mine out yet. Waiting on the led’s to come in.

Ok man I just got done doing this so I’ll try to help. You have two screw that hold the bracket behind the controls they are gold. Look in between the air duct and the top of the climate control above the radio location. You need to remove these first, you will also need a long #2 phillips head to get to them. If you have removed them this gives you some wiggle room. I was able to unscrew the two screws that hold the controls to the fan control panel by pulling out for the front screw and the back screw by pushing back and tucking the screw driver under the dash. It’s not fun but keep after it. I did mine in about an hour, and it does take some monkeying.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Had this problem a few years ago (vent buttons not working). There is a tip online from this site that mentions you can just resolder the connections on the back - it works great! Problem hasn’t come back (has been at least 5 yrs or so)

It’s in the link I posted.

yeah i read it all, but im still not getting the screws out… so i ended up putting it back together in frustration and just hoping my car doesn’t fog up haha
maybe ill have a day free and will be able to take it out and get my pops to re solder it. cause i don’t think anything is wrong with the defroster or anything just when i change like between the vents shooting at my face to my feet it doesn’t change so its obviously the switches. also my rear defroster button doesn’t push in. is that due to the ICU? i’ve read that thread but im wondering if the butotn still pushes in mine completely just doesn['t go

as far as i remember, it was just the 1 screw holding the bracket to the control unit. it’s underneath. as mentioned, you get to it through the radio cut out with a stubby phillips
once you have it out, the tabs will need to be unclipped. careful with them. they’re brittle. once it’s taken apart, you’ll see which connections need to be re-soldered. i just did all of them for good measure

Just did this last night, since my buttons are failing and the lights flicker.

Where those two screws are that you see when you look between the air-duct and control assembly…that’s one end of the of bracket holding the control assembly to the car. On the other end, the back of the control assembly, is one screw that faces the floor of your car. Remove it, you won’t need to remove those other two screws. This way is much easier and doesn’t leave that several-inch bracket hanging off the back of the control assembly only to get hung up on crap in the dash when you try to pull it out.

Now remove all the BIG screws on the front of the fan-speed/temp-mix assembly, pull the fan-speed half of the assembly out and unplug it, set it aside. Take the far right side of the control assembly and push it back in the dash while pulling out the far left/temp-mix side enough to see the two black screws on the bottom of it that attach it to the control assembly. Remove those two screws. With some more maneuvering/wiggling, the control assembly should come out, and the temp-mix assembly should stay in.

Installation is the reverse of removal. It sure is a pain in the butt, but it’s not impossible if you can follow instructions and can be patient.

EDIT: On those two screws that attach the temp-mix assembly to the control assembly…do those NEED to be re-installed, or could they be left off for easier future removal of any of those parts? I don’t see how they’d be absolutely necessary once everything is back in place and the dash bezel is re-installed.

haha. you forgot to put them in before you put it all back together, didnt you?

I guess me asking that question was more of a give-away than I first thought, haha. Yup, sure did forget to put them back in. :dozing:

haha, no worries. i did it as well before. but i put them back in. and you should too

i still cant get that bitch out… i removed my front console and there is still a stupid plastic thing blocking me from removing the 2 screws holding the white bracket to the heater control and the AC

have been looking at this
http://alkaid.org/~misha/heater_control_buttons.png

and it hasnt helped

dude take out your radio and leave the double din empty so you can look under the white bracket, there is one screw faceing down that is holding the white tab attatched to the control unit. you dont need to take off those two screws since there to far back, the screw facing down is much closer and easier to get once to clear the double din from the radio.

aww shoot didnt see the date on this, He probably already took it out and has been fixed.

Ive done this 3 times already, and the easiest way I’ve found to do it is take out the screws holding in the fan/ac button, pull the switch forward and disconnect the 2 electrical plugs that are behind it. Pull that out, and that will allow you to turn the complete assembly on an angle and pull it out. PITA but its alot easier than getting pist off at it because it won’t come out any other way. Hope this helps.
