ok so i just got my da about a month and a half ago, i have a b20b swap and a b16 j1 tranny. SO my gears are very close together, i run about 5-5.5rpm on the highway so my gas mileage ON the highway isnt very good at all. however im trying to figure out a comfortable rpm to shift at for daily driving, off the highway. i was doing about 4500 because the exhaust sounds good running though to the rpm. but my gas mileage wasnt that great so now im doing about 3k but it feels a little boggy shifting that low. i also tried a first third fifth shifting but i dont think thats good for my torc converter…so if any one has any advice hit me up. also just go ahead and post your basic set up and MPG.
(if this info is posted some were just redirect me please i couldnt find anything but im a nooby)
you dont have a torc converter if your car is stick.
Try to shift at 3,300 or 3,500. I shift at 3,500. Skipping gears is ok but you need to know what RPM to shift at. Also gas mileage’s all depend on what gas your using also. Im using 76 91 gas
slow, smooth acceleration, no more than 2.5k rpms on flat, level roads. just get into the mindset that you dont have to be the first car in front of the pack. It’s OKAY if cars pass you starting from a green light lol.
I always keep in mind that it’s more throttle position than anything. The less you put your foot down the less gas you burn obviously.
you can accelerate super fast to 2.5k rpm and still be getting crap mileage. It’s all about how you get to speed that really counts.
regarding the matter of shifting from 1-3-5, i’ve tried this as well…it only works if you can resist applying more gas when moving from 1-3 cause the rpms and relative speed is so low. You’ll end up negating any fuel saving effect and bog down the engine.
ha i feel like a retard…but i guess i shouldn’t feel to bad because it was my friend who just got his auto tech degree that told me i could ruin my torc converter by doing that…cant wait to throw that in his face. and ya thats probably my issue right now because my gears are so short i get aggravated when i get left at the light. i just need to chill drive and not hot rod the car. but i dont have to worry about vtec because i have a p8r set up… figured that would be smart not having to use high octane gas and vtec rapping my mpg.
…your profile says you drive an XSi, and I believe I saw a post somewhere stating this as well. so I guess my question is why would you be using a b20? I would want to keep a car like that as original as possible? Also…how hard was it to register it, and what was the process?
I didn’t think there were any XSi’s in Florida, maybe a few RHD swapped DA9’s.
ok so i have to admit its a conversion, the guy i bought it from put the badge on the back but it did have the motor from the xsi in it but it was NA and was running NOS, not very reliable and for what ever reason cylinder 3 wasn’t firing. so the B20b was swapped in for fun torc but good gas, no premium. SO thanks for calling me out…lol
ya thats what ive been doing and its doing pretty good now. i cant believe how torquey the b20 is, its nuts. its weird if i shift into 4th at like 3.2k it grinds because i THINK maybe my syncros are slowly going out. but if i shift at like 3.8-4k it doesnt…i dont get that. does any body know any good threads for a tranny rebuild/discussion? im thinking of going with another b16 J1 and putting an ls 5th gear in it because im tired of running 5.5k on the highway but i love the close gears for city driving!
i drive without an interior and most of the useless crap (cruise control, wiper squirters, power steering) has been removed. thats how i get 35+mpg in the non summer times.
about 28-30 in the summer (damn AC)
tippin the scales at just under 2200lbs. i dont run the AC unless im sitting in traffic in the summer, which is hardly ever.
wow, your engine sucks… lol
clean those injectors, check your timing, tire pressure, spark plugs, etc. make them brand spanking new! and you might get 261 miles to the tank. =P
