a shop quoted me $350 to remove my b16a out of my car. money is kind of tight, i figure i can buy an engine lift and return it after i’m done… anyways i have a chiltons repair manuel to guide me. but for those who have done this before, how hard is it to do?
its really not that difficult. i bought a chain hoist off of ebay for about $45 shipped and secured it to my ceiling… cheap but effective engine hoist.
i recommend that you get the Helms manual off of the internet (do a search… someone has it up on the net where you can download it). thats all i used to remove my engine and it went off w/o a hitch (well, a couple hitches but thats cause i was pulling the motor from a wrecked car in which the engine compartment was crumpled from the accident).
i am in the process of taking my out for a all-out rebuild and turbo, i am doing piece for piece though i have the chilton and haynes they both have good info and one tells alittle more than the other, i am not really following any certain process though just taking parts out… just remember to mark and tag anything that will be reused in the car. i.e hoses wires etc etc… mines gonna be a pain cause i didnt mark everything, good luck
Its not hard at all if you have a cherry picker. Just disconnect everything you see that goes to the motor…and up she comes.

u can rent a lift for like 30 a day.
then like he said just unplug everything.
only annoying part is pulling the axles.

my local rental yard wanted $40/day for the hoist. I would have needed to rent it 3 different times, so i just bought something that would work… now i can pull motors anytime i want!
personally i didn’t have any trouble with the axles, you know you don’t even have to remove them from the hubs, you can just pull them from the tranny and let them hang there.
91integGS : what did you pay for your hoist? was thinking about renting mine but if it is not that cheap then i will buy one,
– yeah like he said just remove the axles from the tranny, alot easier…

go to www.ebay.com and search for “chain hoist” now its not the same as an engine hoist, and in your situtation it may or may not be useful to you. Engine hoists are nice cause they move, if you get a chain hoist you have to secure it to the ceiling of your garage, and once the motor is up you have to move the car out from under it… so idealy you’d want a real engine hoist–but they cost $250-$300.
the hoist i bought is a 1ton chain hoist, cost me $45 shipped. There are lots of auctions so check it out and see if it would be useful for you.
check this out

you can kinda see the hoist in this pic.
thanks for the replys guys… geez i dont know how you guys do it… its been a total faluire, 1st off the tranny mount alone took me like 2 hrs to get out, and the two shift linkages, i have no idea how to remove from the tranny. can anybody please tell me how to remove them? all the chilton manuel tells me do to is to remove them but it doesnt tell me how… please reply

its all about the helms manual baby! someone scanned their helms and put it in pdf format on the net (its a 92-93 manual… but most of the things are the same or similar). do a search in the archived forum for “helms manual” and look around, you should be able to find out the address and download the manual.
it tells you how to remove the linkage. most of the linkage is a snap. its just the shifter bar itself that mounts to that thing on the boot on the tranny. turns out there is a pin up in there, you need an 8mm punch to pop it out (i used a diff size punch… i think 6mm and it worked fine).
goodluck
ahh finnaly got my engine out
it wasnt really difficult, putting it back in the car will =o/
Indeed putting it back is a bit tougher…at least 2 guys, 3 is best. Don’t go beyond 4, any more then that…you’ll be like caltrans. LOL
Ken
you dont need to remove the tranny mount…just take the bolt out of it…
getting it in is no problem, just tilt in the tranny mount first and rotate it downward making sure the rear mount is aligned. once those 2 mounts are lined up the other 2 have to be
