I’m sure many people have been wondering this, and today I have found the answer. I’ve been running VINs all day and this is what I’ve come up with…
1992 GS-R VINs range from
XXXXXXXXXXX000003
XXXXXXXXXXX003120
1993 GS-R VINs range from
XXXXXXXXXXX000002
XXXXXXXXXXX000851
1992 GS-R’s: 3118
1993 GS-R’s: 850
Total: 3968
This only indicates the number of DB2’s that were actually sold. I’m sure the first couple each year were kept by Honda, explaining why they start at 000003 and 000002.
Although I’m fairly certain this is as accurate a number as we’ll ever get, I can’t be 100% sure it’s perfect. So if you have a GS-R whose VIN doesn’t fit the range for the proper year, let me know and I’ll investigate a little further.

Where did you find these production numbers?(your source of information)… I for the life of me, I have never found any official Honda information on how many DB2 where produced. Thanks for your help!
I made a little program that figures out check digits and just started testing VINs on carfax and other sites like that checking to see which ones were ever sold.
Seems close enough for me…when I bought my 92 gsr from mike harvey acura in 2001 the salesman said only 3900 were made. I can’t believe I found that car at a dealer(90k on the clock)…I also can’t believe my brother got it stolen, and they found it stripped to the frame a week later
I have a hard time believing that Honda or any car maker would use sequential digits in their VINs. That would make generating counterfeit VINs very easy. There must be some type of algorithm that they use, so I don’t think those numbers are all that accurate.
I’m pretty certain the numbers are sequential. Although I’m sure to some people Wikipedia has little creditability, but it says they are sequential on there. Also I checked +/- 20 VINs for the minimum and maximum to ensure all of those were also legit numbers, and they were.
This guy is just running the last six. There are still other numbers/letters that make up the vin
the year in included in the VIN. It’s after the check digit in the VIN
I think this little test he has run is probably pretty accurate. Most auto manufacturers do it in order surprisingly. The first 3 2010 Camaro’s produced were XXXXXXXXXXX000001,000002 and 000003 respectively. They are are sitting in Rick Hendrick’s race shop in Charlotte, NC. They were the first 3 off the line and numero 000004 would be the first one available to buy.
etc, so as to avoid counterfeiting. I’m not saying this is correct but I do have a hard time believe it’s sequential. I haven’t found proof to say otherwise.
Lets just say this took weeks and weeks and weeks. The following figures are based on running vins until they stop in sequence.
1992 GSR (USA)
3120 (#000001 and #000002 unaccounted for)
1993 GSR (USA)
851 (#000001 and #000002 unaccounted for)
1992 GSR (Canada)
602
1993 GSR (Canada)
256 (#800001 unaccounted for)
That brings the total to 4824 (accounted for by Carfax)
