I’m hopefully going to be getting the DA painted by the end of July, but I’m not sure how much cash I should anticipate paying for a quality paint job. The car is frost white (big ew when parked next to an actual white car… or snow) and I’m not sure if I want to paint it Tafetta White or Amazon Green Metallic.
If you got your DA or any other car repainted recently (last year or 2) please answer the following questions:
Cost of job:
Change color from original?:
Paint door jambs and engine bay?:
Body work and priming done by paint shop?:
Shop that did the paint job (mostly only important if you are in the NY, NJ, PA, CT area):
Anything else you want to include:
I am no body mechanic, at least for now until I have a garage and can attempt it in. I was going to have my teg done this summer. It has lots of quarter-panel dents, and dings in random spots. I was going to have the emblems shaved, along with antenna, rear squirter, and keyhole. The front is a little out of alignment from a 5mph collision. I took it to a guy who has 30+ years experience, has a top-of-the-line spray booth + tools, lift, frame rack etc. He does full restorations on antiques and classics, and I have seen his work and it’s literally flawless. I was quoted between 3000-3500. Keep in mind, it’s his own shop and only he and his son do the work. If I didn’t run into unexpected expenses with my engine swap (fuckin transmission) and a bunch of other parts needing replaced, I would have not regretted paying that much compared to Maaco which may have charged me half, but I would have had the assurance of knowing no minor detail was overlooked. I am aiming for next summer now, and will unlikely go anywhere else. He’s in central PA, near the Dillsburg area if you’re interested. Also this was for the stock black color, and it has very minor rust, but would still need to be fixed.
i paid 2700 at a shop in New London CT over a span of two seperate jobs. They charged $1200 the first time to fix all the honda rot and straighten out the radiator support from a fender bender. They replaced the fenders and bumper with supplied oem parts. They primed some of the car. I then brought it back to get it sprayed and paid an additional $1500. I requested oem paint matching (stock color -not a color change). They did paint the door jams inside the hatch and the edge of the fender thats under the hood. They quoted me a week and i told them to take their time as i wasnt in a hurry and i would rather wait for good quality. Well they took 6 months… They didnt fix the how the headlight lined up before painting, so it still sits kinda messed up but i was very very happy with the way the paint came out
fast forward 6 months and i now have paint flaking off the car every time i wash it. The paint is chipping away on both sides of the car on the top and bottom of the moldings. (i brought them the car stripped so they could remove moldings for paint…) i barely rubbed up against the fender and lost a dime size flake of paint.
Moral of the story, be very careful where you bring it. Since the bodywork was already done, i should have brought it to maaco and paid $300. i wouldnt be pissed when it flaked off in 6 months. but whatever you do - dont ever ever ever bring a car to TOMMY SHEAS AUTOBODY in new london CT.
thanks for the replies guys, at least the serious ones. Decided to spend the day yesterday detailing my DA to see if I could avoid having to dish out the cash for a new paint job. Washed it, hit it with a buffer and some rubbing compound (took me 4 hours to get all the dirt and small rust spots that were starting to develop on the surface of the clearcoat off), and waxed her down with some Meguiars wax I had lying around. God damn does it look 100 times better than it ever has. No new paint for me!
i paid 4000 i had tons of rustt hat had to be cut out and replaced. colour change eveyhting got repainted but my engine bay. im doin that eventually with a wire tuck.
