How to change rear engine mount?

hello, im pretty shure my rear engine mount is broken, after alot of searching i couldnt find any really detailed instructions on how to do it, all i found is that it is very hard to do. if someone could explain the process to me or give me a link that would be great. also, how can i be shure its the rear one thats broken? thanks!

Firstly, you can figure out which mount it is by getting someone else to sit in the driver’s seat, start the car up, put it in gear, and with the brakes on, slowly let the clutch out to the point where it starts to engage (with an automatic, just press the brake, and put it in gear).
Meanwhile, with the hood open, you can watch from beside the car (I wouldn’t suggest standing in front of it with your friend putting it in gear  ) and keep an eye on the front mount. If it moves a lot when the load is applied, it needs to be replaced. If the front mount barely moves, but the engine still moves a fair bit, then it’s the rear causing the problem.

Definitely check that first since it’s pretty easy to change the front one, and a HUGE pain in the ass to change the rear. I changed mine a couple years ago, so I can’t remember exactly what I did, but with years of shop experience, I still found it to be very difficult and frustrating.

Hint: You have to take off at least two other mounts and use a jack to support the engine. Then you should be able to get enough room to pry on the engine and slide the rear mount in and out. I think I had the driver’s side mount still attached when I did it.

You’ll also need to take off the metal piece that holds the mount to the engine. That’s the piece on the left in the picture above my post.

is there a difference between rear transmission mount and rear engine mount?

Nope, there’s only one mount back there.

changing the REAR is going to really suck, i think im going to have to change mine :frowning: but check the front first like some people said

alright, thanks for clearing that up for me, i was under the impression that there was a difference between rear transmission mount and rear engine mount. still looking for a good write up on how to change it though

Okay, how much mechanical experience do you have?
If you don’t have much, it’s unlikely you’re going to be able to change it yourself.

If you have a lot of experience, it’s just like any other job – find out what’s in the way and what the easiest way to get at it is.

Get the car on jack stands, and get under the car, and look behind the engine so you know what you’re trying to get at. There’s not a lot of stuff in the way, but it’s still awkward to get at. As said earlier, support the engine with a jack or hoist and remove the side motor mounts. This will let you raise and lower the engine to give you enough room to wiggle the 2 pieces of the mount out.

Take the bolt out that connects the two pieces of the mount first. Then remove the bracket on the engine, and then remove the mount itself. Install in reverse order.

does anyone else have any experience with this? i replaced my front motor mount but the rear is also torn so now i think the good front mount is exaggerating the torn rear mount shakiness… i have the part and can do it at school on a lift. i can loosen three bolts from the top but i think the two in the rear have to be removed from underneath and i have even touched the 2 bolts on the bottom of the bracket

I can’t help, but I agree with the difficulty. I paid a shop to do that replacement for me. I couldn’t get my hands back there and even the mechanic said it was difficult but the full size lift really did help.

changed it with people at school and it is so much smoother when i shift.

it really helped to take the bolt out of the driver side motor mount out so you can move the engine and transmission around to get the mount in and out. probably couldve undone both side mounts but we did just 1

couldnt imagine doing it at home on the ground especially for the first time and by myself

Success! Yay! Yeah a previous poster above in this thread stated to remove one of the side mounts. I thought you had tried that

yes this thread helped because the guy recommended doing that.
