How to fix the ICU for less than $5

My oil light used to be on all the time, sometimes dim, sometimes flashing. I got a new ICU and it’s off now. I have driven the car for 20k miles, lol, I figured it wasn’t the oil pressure.

Works!

Sup All,

Just wanted to say that I got my fixed ICU back and it looks good, and eveyrthing is running.

I want to thank

For the used ICU and repair service, was a little tough to get the ICU out, but everything works fine now, I will let you know if anything starts to deteriorate again, but Im hoping it stays the same.

no problem, glad i was able to help

Glad it all works. There should be no problems at all with the new capacitors.

Ok so I need some guidance on my ICU. I think both of the caps are bad, cause I see leakage around both of them, and obviously I want to replace them. I’ve seen a lot of different types mentioned in this thread, and I just want a straight answer of which exactly to buy for each cap - the bigger one, and the smaller one. Just tell me what to tell the people in Radio Shack, basically, lol.

Actually, could you first tell me if my ICU is fried or still useable? The only problems it has are the oil light, the hatch ajar light, and I guess the headlight buzzer doesn’t work, not sure about the door one but I don’t think that works either. The wipers are fine and the rear defrost turns on (but doesnt do shit for the window!!!), and it doesn’t have the random beeping. The one I am using right now does have those problems so I figured I’d try to fix the one I took out. Anyway here are some pictures:

I’m wondering if this means anything: the far left white path, is that screwed up by that burnt spot? I see the middle and right paths are connected, but I wonder if that left one screws something up?

This is by the smaller cap, and I just want to know what the dark green area is, if anything at all

Reasonable???

:uhoh: Thanks in advance…

Someone sent me over here. I have 92GS and this weird intermittant beeping. Today the brake light came on for a while. I checked the fluid level and it was fine. After having done so tho, the brake light stayed off but beeping continues. How difficult is it to remove ICU? AND is there anyone in Socal I could pay to fix? I’m really clueless and disabled. I get geeked everytime I go to mechanic that I don’t want to go anymore. TIA!!

It’s kind of a bitch to get out, and I’m still looking for directions on how to fix mine… hint hint

shoot. that is not good news!!! now what???

My biggest issue was unplugging the connector on the top of the ICU, but only cause I had problems with the top bolt of the fuse box and I had no room to work with. Also if you don’t have small fingers this could be hard (I’m glad I do, it helps). I fucked up pretty bad putting it all back together, I broke the hood latch…although it still works :worry:

changed icu and still have probz

i recently changed my icu and now my wipers are acting wierd and my indicator lights are outta wack…think u can help me?.?.?.?

Well it sounds like you got a bad one. What are the wipers doing exactly? Are you having problems with the INT setting? Mine works the same as the LO setting.

the wipers dont come until the second click which the medium wipe…its not coming on, on the first click…and my indicator light on the outside are acting up 2…when i put the park lights my indicator lights come on but it doesnt blink its just on and when i put my left indicator on the right side blinks as well as the left…mayb i do have a bad icu because i got from a juk yard…but its better than my old 1…

you got a bad icu man, id say send the other to the guy that fixes them on here and have a better one.

Will it NOT work, if I put in a 85c capacitor??

Not if you want to replace it again very shortly.

This is and exact replacement (spec wise) of the big one, but only a newer model. 493-1779-ND (Nichicom 100mf, 16v, 105c).

This one, 493-1861-ND (Nichicom 100mf, 35v, 105c). Highter volt so it doesn’t overheat like the original 16v one.

This is a replacement of the smaller one in the upper right hand corner, 493-1856-ND (Nichicom 33mf, 16v, 105c).

If anyone wants me to take a crack at repairing your ICU hit me up. I’ve got enough for 5 more ICU’s. Although I can not promise it will be 100% functional after the repair.

Well, I replaced the capacitors in 2 of my ICU’s and, right from the start it didnt work…so I dont have a freakin clue now :frowning:

Did you use 100mf, 35v, 105c? or an 85c capacitor?

I used a 85c capacitor

I believe thats the problem then.

Fuck this. I replaced the caps, and when I put it back in, it was MUCH WORSE! The only thing that improved was the oil light went out! Everything else worked before but now it didn’t, plus for some reason my tachometer quit working! I just put the other broken one I had back in.
