How to fix the ICU for less than $5

I’m pretty sure this caused by the icu. But at the same time not !00% sure. During the day time when I press my brake my engine temp goes from normal operating temp to almost overheating. When that happens I’ll either rev up above 2000rpm or just simply rev up and let it drop and do it over and over again untill the temp goes down. At night with my lights on, I’ll press my brake and my dash lights will dim as I’m rolling or at a stop. But when I’m parked the lights will dim and my temp gauge will climb. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Probably one of the fans, idle fan possibly.

2. Replace your grounds.

[All the infomation you gave on replacing the C9 Capacitor (100 to 200 35v) on the ICU card was perfect. The PIC you inclosed was perfect. After hours of disassembly, I went to Radio Shack, my shaking hands did the unsoldering and resoldering, the reinstall was easy, and now the rear defogger and its’ light - key/door/headlight alarm - intermittent wiper - all work.

I came across a ICU (junkyard) & to my surprise it was in good shape

Here’s a shot of the ICU’s (mine is on the left)

Notice the burned (brown leakage)

Life is good now, the beeping has gone away, my side blinker lights are back on / all 3 speeds on the wipers are working!!! woo woo

That one will probably encounter the same problems. I’d swap out those capacitors just to be safe. While the board is undamaged.

Wiper Delay Fix

Just replaced the capacitor in my ICU. I used a 100 microfarad, 35V one from Radio Shack. It was $1.40.

Works as advertised now!!! I love simple little fixes like this.

ICU Fix

:mad:OK, after a few days the problem came back. I’m gonna check my soldering work again. If the problem remains, I’ll replace the whole ICU with a brand new one from Honda. No point using a junkyard ICU, they’re probably just as bad as mine, or worse, who knows.

Well my defroster sometimes worked and my wipers were totally fvcked so I pulled my ICU and it have the same leakage spots as in the pic…so I’m going to try and find another at the wreckers but my question is now my brake lights stay on all the time. If this caused by the ICU or should I be looking at something else?

Trying to find someone to help my jump start my car at 11pm on a Monday night sucks!!!

replace the grommet/ stopper that goes on the brake pedal assembly. you can tape a coin over the hole. doing so will trigger the brake switch aand turn off the lights

thanks a lot!..found the broken bit of the previous plastic piece on the floor. I just replaced it with a bolt and 2 nuts…I shouldn’t have to worry about ever again

ICU still not fixed

I just swapped mine out today and replaced the capacitor with one I got from radio shack. Put it back in and nothing changed. Still no rear defrost, intermittent wiper, and headlight reminder. There was quite a bit of black crap on the board that didn’t come off when i cleaned it with IPA. Does anyone know where I can get an ICU in the san diego area (junk yards or someone selling)? Thanks.

UPDATE:

Just went to an acura/honda junkyard and found an ICU in perfect condition for 40 bucks, swapped it out and everything works now, just need to swap out the capacitor for good measure

My intermittent wipers don’t work, but that’s not the problem I’m really worried about. When I press the rear defrost switch the light blinks constantly and I can hear the relay under the dash clicking on and off really fast…

I also can press the hazard switch, blinkers, and sometimes the bright switch and it does the rear defrost light blinking really fast and the relay thing. Could this be the ICU problem? I’m going to pull the ICU out in an hour to check it, but I figured I would ask if that is my problem.

I pulled the ICU out and it is fine, no issues on it what so ever. What can my problem be?
