How to hit ~10k rpm

I’ve got a stock B18A1 right now. But i’m wondering how hard it would be to get to atleast 9k rpms? I mean ideal goal is 10k rpms but i can live with 9k. Would it just be like head work or would I have to balanace the crankshaft and get new rods/pistons?

I was looking at this KMS valve-train package and thinking that would help me get over the 7k that I can hit now. Would it be worth it?

And i’ve got a TE04H Mitsubishi turbo that I can fool around with. It would most likely only put out like 6-7lbs of boost but thats better than nothing, especially since it was free. Since the boost is so low would it be alright to throw it on a stock bottom end if I got that valve-train package and a set of camshafts and gears?

bah, help me out.

if you’re going turbo, you won’t need to rev to 6million rpms to make power.

in fact, with a small turbo like that, the turbo will run out of breath by 5500-6000rpms.

most cars that are revved that high are built that way, and not just to say they rev to 10k. its because they are built to be a high horsepower 4cyl. they have no torque and once you get to a certain point, you can’t make any more power without going with an aggressive cam that shifts the powerband WAAY up. so then its all about having a PERFECTLY balanced bottom end and the right valve train package that will allow it to spin that high.

well thats the thing too. Is I’m not sure if I actually want to use this turbo to go turbo. As you said it is a small turbo. But would having a decent vt still be desirable? Or should I just throw that little turbo on the stock block and say who cares?

if you really want it, buy a hondata, it can reset your rev limiter

here even has full boost crap.

i have a hondata s200 already. but i still haven’t either figured out how to hook it to OBD-0 or if I wanna convert to OBD-1 without a new motor yet. Also, the ECU I have now is chipped with some lame ebay chip but it does reset the rev limit to 8.5k and the fuel mapping feels different. I have yet to dyno it to see if anything useful is occuring or not.

even with the rev limiter set to 8.5k I can only hit 7.25k max. But even that is stretching it.

I think i’ll go dyno it sometime next week and see what its doing now. that might help me decide more which way to lean.

go to a shop have them do it
trust me its worth it
i dont remember how mush they charged me for the obd2 harness but it is worth it

How old are you? Whats your reason for wanting to rev to 10k? How bout build a motor worth revving high.

what the hell? who cares what my age is. that has nothing to do with 10k. how about come up with a useful comment or question or gtfo.

^ the reason he asked ur age is cause only a young mind could actually think that u could get ur B18A to rev up to 10K.

i dont think ive ever seen a B18A rev to 10k but it can be done. But the real question is, Is it safe? and will it make power there? The answer is No, it wont be safe and it will not make power there. U would have to have some crazy cam just to make power up to 9K. Rite now im revving to 7800. Ideally 8500 is the absolute max u would wanna rev ur B18A to but thats with aftermarket everything.

I’ve got two Honda’s in my garage that redline beyond 10K RPM

How high you can make power to is what matters. With a B18A no matter what you do to it, you wont’ be able to rev to 10K. the highest revving car on here revs to 9.5K…and it’s a 2.0L Vtec…

thats funny…because archon just said he has two that rev over 10k. now not only could a young mind but also perhaps an inexperienced mind? Hence why i’m asking questions. Now if all I’m gonna get on here is a bunch of shit about how age has to do with rev limits then i’d be better off just drilling a whole in my head. But if I can actually get questions answered or if people actually have useful suggestions…then I might want to stick around.

I said in the beginning that I’m not sure what I want to do, and I’m sure a lot of NA GSR blocks built correctly can hit over 10k rpm. So if a B18A block was built using those same things with say a B16 head for ls/vtec and a lot of internals…10k wouldn’t be too difficult. whether it makes power is another question.

So far we have come up with 10k is possible, but not worth it because of the lack of power. The small turbo that I have is small. And somehow a persons age defines how high their engine can rev.

Lets get back to the discussion. How can you hit 10k rpm and still be climbing the powerband? Not stock at all, not limited to a B18A block, and yes, turbos can be included.

one last thought, if 10k rpm on a b18a has never been done usefully, wouldn’t it be a fun goal to set? kinda like a 9 second metro? http://youtube.com/watch?v=aX3L9IinnqQ

I know these aren’t B18A engines…but still:

should I keep going?

You will really have to work on the stroke and such, but if you want power that high your car is gonna fall on its face off the line. IMO that wouldnt make up for the high redline.

Keep finding vids till you find an LS, so far they are all vtec engines. Those already had a much higher redline.

Thank you RiceIntegra. Someone gets it. Let me guess, when you get the money you’re gonne do a twin turbo RWD, right catawalks? Do some research, you’ll find asking dumb questions will only get dumb answers.

ok?

he said 2 hondas… not 2 honda cars.

if you don’t understand, i’m saying he has 2 honda bikes.

b18a blocks will not rev up to 10k as safe as a b16 or b18c block will. Go take a look at the internals and tell me why.

[QUOTE=catawalks;1739750]thats funny…because archon just said he has two that rev over 10k.

I also have a Honda in my garage that revs well beyond 10k RPM, its called a 600RR. But, it actually makes power.

Wow…

Talk about being defensive…I don’t seem to recall being anywhere harsh in my post…may not have been the most informative, but man…

you’re deadset on hitting 10k. This guy is dead set on going 200mph. You 2 should talk.
