…so I got my AEM cam gears, and i don’t want to pay to install it and plus i want to learn how to do this. So i would really appreciate it if someone shows me how. Instruction and pics(if possible) could really help me out. Thanx guys.
no pics, but I’ll try an explain.
1.)Pull valve cover off via the 7 10mm crown nuts.
2.)Pull plugs out.
3.)remove top plastic timing belt cover.
4.)Turning counterclockwise, align motor at No.1 BTDC (white mark on crank pulley line up with pointer on lower plastic cover, along with the stock cam gears “up” pointed up on both of them, and with a screw driver in No.1 cylinder, the screw driver should be as high as it will go.
5.) When your motor is at TDC, you will find that on your No.1 intake and exhaust cam holder (the one closest to the gears) you will see hole in each one. These should align fairly closely with holes in the cams. Stick a drill bit (select size accordingly) through the cam holder into the cam. This will hold your cam in place.
6.) loosen 14mm Tensioner bolt right above the crank pulley, in the plastic timing belt cover. There may be a piece of plastic covering this bolt.
7.) Turn the crankshaft clockwise and you will see the belt loosen up.
8.) Tighten tensioner bolt
9.) pull the belt off the gears
10.) Loosen the two 12mm cam gear bolts, and pull the cam gears off. CAUTION: there are two keys the size of this “I” that may fall out. Pull the cam gear off SLOWLY and you will see the key on the top of the cam.
11.) install the teeth back in place on the cam, and put the new gear on, keeping an eye on the teeth. Tighten the bolts. BE SURE to tighten the 3 bolts on each gear holding the gear in posiiotn with the degree markings. I found these to be a bit loose.
12.) align your crank at TDC (white mark lined on crank lined up with pointer on plastic cover, screw driver at highest point.
13.) slip timing belt back on the gears, making sure the two white lines on the right side of the exhaust cam and the left side of the intake cam line up.
14.) loosen tensioner.
15.) turn the crank counterclockwise until you see the belt tighten, and you feel resistance. DON"T TURN ANYMORE! The resistance is from the drill bits that are still holding the cam in place!
16.) tighten tensioner bolt
17.) remove the drill bits. You may have to use ur 12mm and turn the gears a bit.
18.) turn the engine over a few times by hand to make sure everything stays lined up (white mark on crank with pointer on plastic cover, lines on cam gears)
19.) put everything back together.
NOTE: before taking everything apart, after you pull the valve cover off and take the plugs out, turn the engine over a couple times by hand to get an idea how tight the timing belt is. Then you know how tight to make it when you put it back together.
ARCHIVETHIS
I will add pics to this soon as I have to do the same since one of my cam seals are leaking on the cam gear side.
Cool Thanx!!!
I’ll do this with a friend, he said “theoritically I know how to install it,” everytime he says “theoritically” that’s always good. I have to ask you one more question, What do you think is a good tunning for a '90 LS integra? My friend said a pretty good tunning for it is +2 to intake & -4 to exhaust. Is that a good tune??
The best is to tune it on a dyno.
BR is running +2 and -2…
You can try +3 intake and 0 exhaust.
well said!!! following these instructions step-by-step will get your cam gears done right. i could’nt have worded it better as i’ve had my gears done the same way(different tricks, but these sound better)
***word of advice: make sure you know where that “key” is at all times!!! it can very easily slip off while removing/installing gears and it won’t be pretty if it falls in between the timing belt cover and the block - TRUST ME.![]()
NEIL------ archive this or copy it to teg tips. awsome instructions!!!
BTW!!!
You eitheer haveee to cut or reemove thee top back plastic cover, otherwise the gears may rub the back cover.
My VTEC Cam Install Guide walks you through “how to install cam gears” with pics. Go check it out. It’s on the teg tips page, Best of luck.
Sorry the link isn’t working.
Only the g2guru himself can post the link I guess. He has great pix btw.
Here you go…the direct link…

IMPORTANT!!! If you don’t have a VTEC motor, only torque the cam gear bolts to I believe 27ft-lbs. 41ft-lbs. is only for the LARGER VTEC cam gear bolts.
Thanx !!!
This really help especially the pix, i’m going to install it with my friend on monday. I just need to confirm the tune for the cams. Some says +2 intake -2 exhaust, and my friend said +2 intake -4 exhaust. Anybody else have any other good tune for '90 LS.
