how to launch?

Just wondering if any of you guys that hit the track, or have hit it in the past, might have any tips on how to properly launch

practice.

It all depends on the motor set up, track or street conditions, and how well you know your car. When I had a stock LS. I would launch at about 3200rpm-3800rpm. But then again…Everyone is different.

Well that’s all i’ve got a stock ls motor. I wanna try a couple of runs at the track this summer, just to see what i can do. I’ve never been on a track before so I’m not expecting great numbers, but would definately be a fun time. Just don’t wanna make an ass outta myself when i’m there lol

edit - thanks for moving the thread too. didn’t realize i’d posted in the wrong forum

Dont worry so much about lookin like an ass… All that shit is retarted. When you test launching at a track EVERYONE has to practice a launch. Even professionals. Each track is different and so is each car. If you pay to use the track, who the fuck cares if you dont know how to launch yet. All you need to do is practice. Make sure that you have money for axles though. Just a tip.

5K, and you FEATHER the clutch; not dump it. u dump it and u’ll just sit there.

OR u can go 2K, and dump it.

but feathering is usually faster.

the way i usually do it is to rev up to somewhere between 3.5 and 5.5k rpm, then smoothly engage the clutch while adding more throttle - think of an old fashioned set of scales… one side goes up while the other side goes down.

you’re aiming for about 5-10% wheelspin, which isn’t really much at all. another way to think of it is that the wheels should turn about 10.5-11 times in the distance it would normally take them to roll 10 times.

if you get too much wheelspin, try lowering the launch rpm, and/or being more smooth with the clutch engagement. if you get too little wheelspin, (which usually results in a bogged launch: the revs drop too low, out of the powerband), raise the launch rpm, feed in the throttle faster, and/or slip the clutch more.

this technique has resulted in 2.1 second 60’ times on street tires, in a mildly modded 91 gs.

this video shows how it’s done, but it was only my second launch on these tires, (used toyo t1-s’), so there was just a little bit too much wheelspin - you can hear me lift off the throttle slightly, then get back on it. this run was a 2.2 60’, but it’s the only decent launch i’ve got on camera.

also, be aware that slipping the clutch like this will wear the friction material down at a faster rate than ordinary driving… that’s just the cost of racing. however, don’t overdo it with the slipping…

anyway, enjoy, have fun, and just keep experimenting with it.

Excellent post

I concure Dr.

ever since i swapped out a b16 in my car ive been launching arou 5.5k-6k till now that my car is boosted on street tires…dumping the clutchat that high rpm with be a nightmare cuz wheels are just going to spin…so i just slip the clutch and i try to be in vtec and under boost…works for me
