"How To Relocate Battery .... now with Pictures

can someone help clarify something. when i had my trunk full, say, 75lb, i cornered better. now, will relocating the battery help duplicate that situation? and how does a sway bar fit in? i know it reduces roll, good. but it increases oversteer, so doesnt that mean weight is shifted towards the driveaxle, which would defeat the battery weight? i know there are lots of ways to control over/understeer so it may not be related to weight right.
so im lost. my only purpose here is better handling…

going form niterior to the trunk i believe there is a lil suppose to a cover to control/adjust the seat belt settings. if you sit in the back seats in 2 dr you shoudl be able to see this plastic piece around your legs you can prob route it throuth there into the trunk to make it work .

Teg92- thanks for the clarification. Has anyone compared battery location behind the front passenger seat to the trunk like this? Was there a handling difference?

It seems to me the center of rotation should be near the driver or just behind( in a hatchback anyway) and any movable weight should be as near to that point as possible. An ice skater will spin MUCH faster with a 45 pound battery near to their body than if they held it out at arms length. So it seems a car should whip around a corner all that much easier with a majority of it’s mass near it’s rotational center.

I think conserving rotational energy is more important than offsetting weight distribution in a front driver.

DAY U IZ - You can get that sealed battery box at your local marine parts store. They have got those sealed battery boxes for boats and they are pretty cheap, about 20 to 25 bucks. My brother bought one for his Supercharged 5.0L Mustang. But get that as soon as humanly possible because battery fumes will give you dizziness on long drives, headaches and other unhealthy sideaffects.

Walmart sells decent battery boxes and they’re cheap. I didn’t notice a handling difference whatsoever when I put my battery in my trunk. I will probably submit my pics for non-sedan portion of the how-to.

really what are your suspension upgrades? i wonder if what i experienced was more from a total weight on the entire car rather than it just being in the rear…

that’s what happens when you have a gutted cat =( and trying to help people at 4 am =0

my current time here in EST IS 5:47 so as you can see that post was done at 10:47 am so about 5 hours diff so you rlooking at 5:47 am hehe

If you do cosider this please look in to a gel battery(optima). Beacuse in my days working at the audio shop I saw two many people who have done this and then have had their battery leak all over their trunk. And as mentioned earlier that fumes can build up, especaly for you two door peeps.

The local Costco has Red top optimas for $99.00, which is cheap sense they retail for $130.00.

Sometimes you can find them cheaper but it is well worth it.

I kinda have a large stereo so I run the deep cycle yellow top and is one investment I don’t regret.

Just my $.02

My battery already fell over and leaked all over my trunk :frowning: real bitch to clean, and my carpet will never look right again.

Look into the latest issue of ‘Super Rod’ (imo, the only GOOD car magazine on the rack these days if you can even find it… I could go on for days about how import car mags are just sh*t). They have a detailed article on relocating your battery (not just to the trunk) and also has some info on a kit made by a company specifically to bolt down an Optima in your trunk.

Unless it’s an Optima, for godsake, get a sealed battery box!

Pics of my battery re-loaction.

More room in engine bay

Lyonel…do you have the battery box vented to the outside? And will you please put the master cylinder back where it belongs!!!

Do you find that the rear headrests hamper your view on the passnger rear quarter side?

TIA

Heh… i’ll leave the MC where it is for now.

The battery is vented through the bumper vent on that side via a clear tube.

Headrests don’t hamper vision at all. Actually I might remove them and see how that goes

Nice work!!! I have the same box. Could you give me some details on how you relocated the MC?

danm this battery relocation thing is catching on. i did mines like in summer 99. just did it to free up space under the hood. i don’t have pic (damn photopoint) but if you look up under members you can see how i got mines. if i would have know it was gonna be this popular i would have put it up a while ago.

Sweeeeet! Manual seat belts!

Eric, his car is JDM - right hand drive, thus MC is on the other side.
