how to sand down a stock lip?

OK, I have a stock lip on my front bumper and it has been pretty beat up. Plus a lot of screw are missing and I need to remount it properly with new bolts and so on. While I have the lip off I want to sand it down and try to get rid of some of the divots and scratches and crap. Do I just use sand paper and go at it? If that’s what I need to do then what kind of sand paper should I use and will the finish still be black (the lip has never been painted)? So if anyone has any ideas on how I can restore my lip then please help me out. Thanks in advance for all your help.

start with 400, then go up to 600. Wet sand only though. The bumper will look very dull though if you don’t paint it. Maybe some good ol’ Krylon would be better then the dull finish, but you would need to sand it off before you get it painted to match your car. It should only be $70-$100 to paint it though-if you have the money just do that

excuse my ignorance but what is Krylon and what does it do? I don’t really want to paint the lip yet cause I may paint all my mouldings in a few months. I just want to clean up the lip a bit and make it a little more presentable. Thanks for the advice so far.

krylon=brand of spray paint. It’s ghetto, but better then the dull look. But don’t do it if youre getting everything painted in awhile

If I get your question, you are asking about the small black lip around the bumper not the whole bumper cover. I think Vtecteg was talking about redoing the whole front bumper.

It will be hard to sand the black lip around the front edge because its softer plastic so I would start with a pretty rough grit paper (80) and keep it from getting hot during sanding. THen move up through the grits to about 240 I dont think the rubber lip is ever smooth enough to require anything as fine as 600 grit. Just make sure to not just sand grooves in the lip, try to feather out all the scratches. No painting should be required unless you want to change the color.

yeah, i was talking about the lip only, sorry if descritption isn’t great. Yeah, my lip is pretty beat up and I want to smooth it out as much as i can. I will probably paint all the mouldings to match my car, but not right now since i’m pretty low on cash. So I just want to make what I have look as good as possible. Thanks again for the help. I guess just sanding it down should be good enough.
