how to "Smoke" carbon fiber

can anyone tel me how to smoke carbon fiber. i have a seibon hood, the clear coat is still good, but it looks my hood turned into kevlar. i would like to smoke it to make it last longer and a guy at my work is willing to do it for me for free.
any help much appreciated thanks

To give something a smoked look all you do is add a little black paint in with clear and apply to whatever you want “smoked” - lights, hood, or whatever. I always thought the smoke look was just for looks (pretty sure it won’t make it last any longer unless the black paint is helping to block out some UV or something). Just having a fresh coat of quality clear over it might help make it last longer.

to smoke it use that nite shades stuff in a spray can and appy coats until you get the amount of SMOKE effect u want it should protect it some… cause its like putting clear coat on it and its darker then clear coat. correct me if im wrong just an educated guess… but i have used nite shades on tails and what not. gl

thanks for the reply’s but how far should i sand down and what grit sand paper should i sand with?

thanks again for the reply. but my clear coat is perfectly fine. its just the yellowness is getting on my nerves since my lip and rear visor are nice and newish looking. i want to get them all smoked.

The steps are still the same - you still have to sand and reapply clear to do what you want to do. Only difference is that you probably have a lot less work since your original clear isn’t pealing so you won’t have to sand deep into the original to even it out.

-sand
-apply tinted clear
-apply regular clear if needed
-sand
-buff

You don’t want to sand it with anything more aggressive than 800gritt… I’m thinking more along the lines of 1000 gritt paper. You want to use the WetOrDry type of paper that comes in sheets… get a bucket of water, dip the paper, and sand. Then wipe the part dry, and you’ll be able to tell where is sanded and where isnt. Then once its all sanded, spray it with whatever you’re getting.

Agreed with the post above me… spray with tinted clear, then go over it with regular clear to ‘seal’ it. Then sand with some 1200 or 2000 gritt paper, then buff/polish it up.

If you want to just get rid of the yellow you could sand with 1200 then 2000 and buff it up. I’ve never personally done the smoked out look when painting, so I can’t recommend what materials to use as far as that goes.
