Hey i was considering doin a retro fit on my headlights and possibly doing my rear lights a lil different. I was wondering the best way to take the lights apart. I know some people said the oven, and if so at what temp. I’ve also heard heat gun as well. I would appreciate if those that have taken them apart can lmk how they did it. Also what the best and easiest way to do it would be. Thanks
Remove all wiring, bulbs, metal tabs holding the glass to the housing, etc.
Heat oven to 200 F
Turn oven off, and insert headlight on a baking sheet, 2x4, etc. to prevent warping.
Set timer for 8-10 minutes but watch whats going on through the window on the oven.
Remove headlight and separate it quickly before it cools. I’ve found using two long flat screwdrivers works well. Also, trim the glue with a razor once the separation starts to speed up. You might need more time for an oem headlight. The ebay ones seperate pretty easily.
Tails are a little different, I’ve never opened up integra tail lights before so I don’t know what you’ll need to do.
thanks I’ll try that. Just tryin to figure out how Im going to find the money for the hid retrofit
There’s also the cheaper easier option of using the Morimoto mini bixenons from The Retrofit Source. They don’t have them listed on their site but if you email them directly, they do have them available. Its all aftermarket xenon parts but you can get the whole setup a lot cheaper than using oem parts. They have pretty good output and installation is a snap. Remove the headlight lense and bulb, insert the projector into the oem bulb holder, screw on the locking lugnut on the back, check the rotation, reinstall the lenses, and boom your done with the retrofit.
yeah…the Morimoto Mini would be the best choice since it’s the smallest…and it’s pretty cheap too. also, light output is decent, i installed a set on my brothers '87 4runner last week. oh yeah, it’s listed on theretrofitsource web-site now for $135.
note: do not use a heat gun when taking apart the headlights. the excessive heat and pulling can bend the lens(if plastic). you can use the heat gun when putting headlights back together but try not to focus it on only one spot. a brushing motion is best.
what do u guys use to put it back together? rtv, honda bond, etc. I saw the minis but was thinking about the fxr. The ebay lights suck for light output.lol Just tried them today
Heat the original glue up in the oven with the same method and clamp the two sides back together. Then silicone any gap thats left. It worked for me. I have no moisture problems at all.
thanks a lot for your response guys cause I never really read a direct answer to this question. Most were i just threw them in the oven.lol
There was a Teg Tip on the old site about this. I am getting moisture on my driver’s side 1 piece headlight and I want to take it apart and get rid of the discoloration it has caused…
I’ve seen some ruff looking headlights so I’m hoping to do the retro soon before I get a lot of discoloration.
