how to tell if b16a head is auto or manual?

I remember someone talking about how there’s a way to tell if an imported b16a head is from an auto(milder cams) or a manual. I think it had something to do with the code on the head that starts with a “p”. Anyone know? anybody? anybody? bueller?

As far as I know the only way to tell the difference is to check the profile of the cams. I do not know of any other way.

The best way is if you see the AUTO tranny hangin off of it, like I did. Not sure if there’s something in the head designator to tell you for sure, though.

All the heads start with a P… but I do think the cams have a code on them that is different from the manual cams (I’m unsure about the code though) But if you do pull the cams check them against someone elses and you will notice the profiles are different.

I could be wrong and don’t take my word for this. BUT, someone told me once that a PR3-1 or plain old PR3 head is from an automatic. You will usually run across PR3-2 or PR3-3 heads which come from a manual B16 or R Spec motor. I could be wrong though.

This is only for first gen heads… the intake springs are single, not dual.
