I need to replace my wheel studs, but I cant get the hub nut off. Is there any trick to it? Or am I just weak? I weigh 200lbs and i stood on the breaker bar and nothing moved! Maybe just cuz its 11 years old?
it can be a very tough one to take off.
get the longest breaker bar you can (a pipe on the end will help you get some leverage). Also, try putting some wd40 or liquid wrench on the nut a couple hours before taking it off. I’d even suggest spraying it, letting it sit for an hour or so, then spray it again and take the car out for a drive, the heat may help a little. Then pull it in in and remove the nut asap. This worked for the brake rotor screws on my car.
Lastly, make sure you de-stake the nut… i’m sure you alredy did that though.
as a last resort you may have to take it to a shop that has EXTREMELY powerful impact wrenches.
recently i broke my dad’s breaker bar trying to remove an axle nut. good thing his tools are lifetime warranty!
Make sure that you bend out the top of the nut with a punch or a small chisle. Soak the alxe shaft and nut with Penitration oil and let it soak in for about 20 minutes. Put the spare tire or a steelie on and set the car on the ground, I use an 18 inch breaker bar and a 32MM socket, works every time and I weigh slightly less than you. (10 lbs less)
don’t think he’s gonna be driving the car anywhere to help loosen it or take it to a shop. And putting the spare on kinda isn’t an option either. He’s gotta get the hub off because all 4 studs broke off causeing his wheel to come off completly.
I don’t know what to suggest Dustin…I’ve always had air tools to get mine off.
Have somone sit in the car and push on the brake pedal while you use a breaker bar. If the brakes can stop a car it will hold the hub hard enough to break the axle nut loose. Have fun pulling the hub if all the studs are broken. You will have to use a slide hammer with a 3 or 4 armed clamp.
Use a ladder and breaker bar
We had to do it to my friends integra had air tools but it didn’t work. Here’s what you need.
32mm socket
18in breaker bar or longer
6in extension
metal ladder
jack stand
- What you do is have the 32mm socket with a 6in extension and the breaker bar.
- Put a jack stand underneath the 6in extension. (This will prevent the extension from bending and keep everything level.
- Take the ladder, hopefully metal, and place the breaker bar between the ladder’s step. It’s hard to imagine but if you place the breaker bar right, you can pull on the top of ladder for a very large leverage and it will press on the breaker bar.
This should free the axle nut.
Hope this helps
Thanks for everything guys. I got it off. Good 'ol impact gun baby!
