huge TRANNY PROBLEM HELP!!!

In school…car is broke down. Thought it was the clutch, but now I don’t know. I have a y1 cable b16 tranny with factory limited slip and type R final drive. Well I was driving then when I slowed down to take a turn it just whinned. Ok I though it was just the clutch so thats not too bad.

Well moving on, I always had this wierd popping noise that I thought was a axle, but the boots aren’t broke and they seemed fine. I shook the d\s axle and it seems to have lots of play. I was wondering whether or not the tranny is shot, limited slip is messing up, or just need a clutch. I will be doing plenty of research, so any help along the line will be appreciated.

its probably one of the axles, my buddy did the exact same thing he had a poping sound and he took a right turn and his driver side axle went, i would start there and see

I will be popping them out tomorrow. Hopefully it’s that. I might just try to change them and see. I hope it’s not the tranny or clutch.

How longs’ it been since they been changed? Might just wanna do ‘em for the hell of it. Remans. aren’t too much from the auto store & they have lifetime warranties so when they start poppin’ again, core 'em back for some new ones. Good idea if you’re learnin to drive stick or learnin to race, drag or otherwise. YOU WILL BREAK’EM RACIN! ALOT!! Better to be able to return it for another than be screwed.

Oh, not sayin’ your a Newb driver Blackknight, just a general statement.

Don’t buy re-mans from auto stores. Buy new ones and you’ll be happy you don’t have to take out and return your shitty out of spec re-mans every other month. Lots of people have had nothing but trouble from them.

remaufactured axles do not usually come with a lifetime warranty. NAPA offers a one year warranty, as does Advance auto.

be sure to ask.

My guess is that one of your axles isn’t seated completely into the tranny engaging the C-clip. And what is happening is that the axle is actually pulling out of the tranny far enough to come off the splines, and that is the popping noise, the splines moving across each other. Jack the car up and use jack stands, then try to push the axles into the tranny to lock the C-clip. Hope I win the guessing game.

ended up being a bad axle. The joint came apart on the d\s without any boot breakage or clicking. I did hear a click sometimes and I still hear it now after changing both axles and p\s lower ball joint. I will also be replacing the d\s balljoint as well tomorrow, so I will ck to see if the d\s is in the joint all the way. I hope that it just that problem, but I heard the intermediate shaft also could be bad. I have vibrations ever since changing the axles. How tight do you guys tighten the lower ball joint bolt? I know what the helms says, but do you screw the nut all the way tight or just enough to get the pin through the castle nut? I ask this because you can always make the threads longer by tightening/pushing against the boot. Thought it might be considered a dumb question, but I don’t care.

Thanks for your help though guys, I know remans suck, but I don’t have much money to buy new axles. I replaced these for free at auto zone. Whenever I have spare cash I will buy new ones cuase I’ve replaced these a lot and I hate doing axles every 6-13 months. h93da6, I’m not affended very easily.lol I do drive my car hard more than I should, but I take very very good care of it as well.

Same Same. ^

Yeah, Mick, I know they suck, but in a jamb & on a budget they serve their purpose. Mine are startin to go, so I’m buyin some goodies soon. Not as tight as I was when I bought the auto store ones. Buyin’ a car will do that to your bank. Worth every red cent though.
:getsome: :manual:

BTW- mine have lasted a over a year w/ no issues until now.

I still have this bad vibration when I drive, also still hear a clicking sound when I turn. I ck’d it today and it seemed that the outer tire rod bolt was loose. Tightened it and it helped, but simptoms still the same. I’m starting to think it’s my rack and pinion. I hate to say it, but I might have to change it soon. really sucks though.

When I shake the wheel I can hear some noise\play in the rack and pinion. I might take the boot off and see what's going on. I think it's possible that I messed it up when changing the LBJ's or the axle. DAmn this is aggravating.

If you hear a clicking sound in turns, that is most likely an axle problem. I have been thru many sets of Autozone remans, and one set I installed clicked as soon as they were installed, so back they went. I literally would cheer when I got a good set.

You can try to get an idea of what else is wrong by performing these simple tests. Jack up one corner, and with the tire still bolted firmly to the hub, grab it at the 12 and 6 oclock positions. Try to move the tire. If you feel play, then it is usually a sign of worn ball joints, upper or lower. Then grab the tire at the 3 and 9 oclock position and try to move the tire. If you have movement, that usually points to tie rods, either inner or outer. If the tire has movement in any position, then that points to wheel bearings, especially if you hear a hum while driving or the wheel gets very hot and is not brake related.

I am just trying to give you some things to look at, and these tests don’t give concrete answers, but will give you a direction to look in. Also make sure all suspension components are tight and bushings are in good condition and cotter pins are present where needed.

sam92teg…i see that you have also used Autozone axles. i just recently replaced my driverside with an autozone, it was running good for a few days…but just recently i noticed when im at a stop then accelerate normally i would hear this ‘clunk’ sound, then soon as car starts rolling it will go away. it also comes back on when i slow down to a stop. my question is…is this normal for cheap Autozone reman axles? should i worry at all about it failing on me soon?

No it is not normal, but it could be the axle and probably is. Autozone just uses a dirt cheap axle rebuilder. For example, one set of axles I bought, the cv boots were clamped too far apart from each other when they did the rebuild. Right after I installed them and I made a sharp turn, both axle boots riped apart. Unbelieveable.

I would make sure your lug nuts are tightened to spec as well as your lower ball joint castle nut. I have heard of this exact thing before, but can’t remember what it was that caused it. Maybe the lower ball joint? A bad motor mount can also cause a similar noise. You can try jacking up your tire and spinning it to see if you hear or feel the clucking noise, maybe you can pin point it at the axle.

I’ve just replaced both ball joints and the axles. I was thinking it was the axle, but it doesn’t seem like it. I had the outer tire rod too loose and tightened it. Then the shaking got better, but not away. I jacked it up again and it seems to be coming from the d\s inner tire rod. I’ve replaced the boot before, so tomorrow I will try to take it apart to see if that’s the problem. It does make noise when I shake it from that area.

sam92teg, thanks for your input. I do know how to test for problems, just one of those things where you think it’s one thing and then you’re wrong…then you’re doing this:think: . Have you ever changed a inner tire rod? This will be a first for me. I’ve changed the outer already.

if not I’ll try changing the axle again, just don’t think that’s the problem. these are sht axles though
