hybrid tranny gearing.

i was just thinking of differant gear combo’s and was wondering if anyone tried installing b16 3+4 gears in an otherwise stock ls ys1. it spaces 1-2 apart but keeps 2-3-4 together since they are the gears you use the most in racing. then ls 5th gear for highway driving or if you don’t need to you could even use the b16 5th gear too, making an awsome tranny. shit used b16 gear sets are only 150-200 in good shape. it is a much cheaper alternative to buying a semi-rare and expensive vtec tranny.

Why would you want a long 1st and 2nd? No matter what engine you are running, Honda’s are not known for their massive torque. A short first gear will help ANY honda engine. Might as well just make a short geared YS1 with a long 5th gear. Why the long 1st and 2nd?

I’ve been trying to get a good thread like this going. I know on the Intertuned DVD with Omni Man, they swap a few different gears in it and a final drive.

BR has a good amount of knowledge about b series trannys (cables at least) and Im sure he will chime in.

My turbo kit is almost done and I dont know what gear combos I can use. I’ve got a jdm small spline y1 (b16), usdm small spline a1 (ls), and a 92-93 ys1 (GSR) and from the availability of parts and gearing; I dont know what the fuck to do! :bang: It looks like its going to be a trial and error thing I guess.

BUMP for a really god TOPIC. We need more experience with trannies for out cars since the cable is becoming available part wise.

Sounds like a good idea to me Krazyteggie, 1st and 2nd pull nicely in my car, its only when I hit 3rd that it seems to be way too long. In another post, I thought I remember them saying that 1st and 2nd in our long geared trannys isn’t that far off from the GSR trannys, but its at 3rd gear that really has a big difference. I don’t feel like searching to see how close since I can’t afford the swap anyway, but if someone else does, post em up.

Oh ya, our final drive is longer also, so if you only change 2nd and 3rd gear, you still won't be as short at the tranny those gears came from since the final drive will still be longer in our trannys. And if you want to change the final drive gear, you will also have to change the mainshaft, since it has to have the shaft gear that matches the final drive gear. I am not 100% sure, but I believe this is correct from some prior research that I have done.

i don’t have an official source for gear ratios, but i believe only 94-01 non vtec trannies use the higher final gear(lower #). i used bad wording. the 1-2 transition is the same as an oem ls tranny. i used an ls tranny on my b18c1 and 1-2 transition was short, and i had problems with the longer transition.
the ls 1st and 2nd gears are not geared down, since the ls motor actually has it’s own torque. all 5 of the b16 gears are geared down to make more torque, so when you add the b16 3rd gear to the ls 2nd it really makes a nice short transition.
ps…nick, it’s too bad your teg will be a daily driver now. before i would suggest the gear combo i’m doing. now i’m going to guess this is your best bet.

it might not be… It might be all drag since i have the k24 crv eg now… well the works… I have the tranny left to do on the DA… Im just clueless about trannies and what is what… Someone get ahold of BR. He knows a ish load y0

i must say ur tranny is butt*ucking ugly. that’d be sweet if the da was ur drag car.

along the same line then, will the y1 (JDM) and the ys1(USDM) tranny gears and final drive interchange then?

no they wont. the y1 has a smaller main shaft and the ys1 has a bigger one; thats why you have to change the disks…

But then again whos actually tried it. who knows…

i think it might be possible to use the y1/s1 internals in the ys1 as long as you use everything. so say ur gsr ys1 cracks the case, you might be abled to swap all the internals in a y1/s1 tranny case. not to sure if you need to mod the case at all but if you do it shouldnt be too hard.

I was told you can use all the cable tranny stuff together. I dunno; I think im just going to use my ys1 gsr tranny; its shorter then my y1

You cant really switch out the 1st gear without going to the corresponding FD that mates with it. It’s not a bad idea if you wheel spin 1st gear.

Here’s an stupid question: I’d like to put the 1-5 gearset from a '94+ LS into my '90 LS transmission while keeping my 4.40 final drive. Is THAT possible?

No it’s not possible …But the LS gearset will fit into a 92-93 box with no problems…As will a GSR gearset of any year fit into a 92-93 Gearbox…

I just converted a Hydro GSR gearbox into a 93 cable case for someone…

Including installing the ITR diff. All went right in with no problems…(Except for having to buy a GSR ring gear)

Jeff

So it is possible to run the gearset on a trans. case with a cable-op clutch. Cool…I like the newer gearset because if I run it with my 4.40 final drive, I get a little bit shorter 1-4 gears with a longer 5th. It’s better acceleration and better gas mileage in the same package.

Does this mean that a 95 GSR mainshaft, countershaft, and final drive will all fit into a 92 cable case?

Anybody else have any experience with this?
