Yesterday i got pulled over and the police officer asked me to get my car refed. He said my intake was illegal(no carb sticker) and i guess he wants to check if my exhaust meets the legal decibel mark.
i have an appointment on friday.
What do they look for?
Also, i ordered an AEM CAI but in our DA’s {my 90} there are two hoses that were in the OEM intake that are not pre-made on the CAI.
Does anyone, who has either been refed, is a ref, or knows if i need to have these hoses on?
ive been reffed before. they look for every one your car is legal like intakes headers and bolt ons have carb stickers and you have no illegal mods like adjustable fuel regulators. and also if it can pass a smog test. thats all they did for me. they got me for having a b20 though.
I’ve also been to the ref with the same situation. All I had was a exhaust w/silencer, which it was removed at the time when I got pulled over, and I had a no name intake. So the cop takes a picture and gives me a fix it ticket. I had to go to the ref too, so all I did was, I put the silencer back on, and bought me a oem intake at the junk. My car barely passed the ref said. So lucky me, but ended up paying like $400 for the ticket. $50 for the ref. $15-20 for the intake.
but yo da9bigboi, 400 for a fix it ticket sounds high as hell,
isnt it you just “fix-it” or pay the ticket, i’ve heard cases where
one needs to pay like 10 bucks for the fix it part but 400, deng
also, im going to just use my new CAI thats carb legal, will i need to use the two smaller intake hoses??
Seems like you got it figured out. Just a suggestion, try putting it all back to stock and then taking it to B.A.R. you’ll pass the visual, then should pass the sniffer test. Then its all good from there. My Ref experience consisted of several different things. $480 later I was legit.
Blkgsrda9, quick question, the 480 you paid was a fine for the fix it ticket?
Please explain, I’m a little confused on that part now and I damn sure don’t want to pay 480.
I think ill just get the oem intake back on and then install the intake.
As far as my exhaust goes, Its not loud but I also don’t have a way of testing it myself, hope I pass :s

Geez, you got me worried. Where in San Diego did you get pulled over at? I pretty much have legal stuff under the hood with a silencer on a no name muffler. But these cops are assholes even if you act in respect to them. They’ll try to get you for something.
BTw, how do you measure the legal ride height? I basically have a two finger gap between the fender and the tire all around. I don’t know if my car is at a legal height.
For the last two weeks, I’ve seen about 3 souped up rides pulled over around the south bay area. I hope they’re not cracking down on imports.
Man this pisses me off. Why do us Honda ethusiast get harrased by them and not pick on chevy camaros, and mustangs with their loud ass engines. Sucks. man.
[This table lists the maximum frame height for various types of vehicles.] * Vehicle Type Frame Height
(1) Passenger vehicles, except housecars 23 inches
(2) All other motor vehicles, including housecars, as follows:
Up to 4,500 pounds GVWR 27 inches
4,501 to 7,500 pounds GVWR 30 inches
7,501 to 10,000 pounds GVWR 31 inches
So basically the GS two door DA will be 23 inches? Measured from the middle of the headlight to the ground?
Dang, mine didn’t pass that. Its measured at 19.5. Thanks.
Yeah, the $480 was for the fix it ticket. CHP got me. I had to pay that after I passed B.A.R. pain in the ass for sure. But afterwards I was legit then a few months later my car was stolen.
I however, did not pass but it wasn’t as strict as it was made out to be.
I drove in, gave my information[ticket case # and registration]
The referee assistants took my car, i was still able to see everything.
They did a visual test to ensure everything was to spec, yes they check pcv’s, iacv’s, hoses, intakes, AND timing.
I failed the timing and emissions portion of the test. The emissions i think is highly due to the fact that my timing is off 11 degrees or so.
Also the police officer who pulled me over put a note on the Police system that my car should not be operated and if it in fact is then it will be impounded… what a prick eh?
As far as ride height and exhaust, i dont even think they checked but then again i can only speak for my case today.
Location: Southwestern College Automotive Department.
will fix my timing this weekend, have another appointment on Wednesday, will update with info, thanks guys!
yup, mine was the same too, I forgot if I paid before B.A.R or after though. It happend 5 years ago and from than on, I nevered had an illegal intake again, except for when I had a db2 gs-r in kansas city, KS, which I was living for half a year in 07, man you can do anything to your car over there.
the ref guy mike is cool and will work with you, ive been to ref and court so many times. as for the fine it all depends on the judge you get, i went 2 months ago and the judge cut me a deal and made me pay 175 under the condition i don’t get pulled over in the next year if i do i pay the rest of the fine. so yeah good luck to you
It just started having all these issues arise now.
I went the second time, timing was correct but my emissions still do not want to pass.
I’m running super rich. I asked my neighbor, who is also my mechanic, what he thought it’d be, we’ve check fuel pressure hose as well as IACV. I looked at my PMG, i think, and it read code 7 and 14 [TPS and IACV] so far i went to the junk yard and bought a IACV but i still am receiving the code. I dont want to but i feel this car is comming to an end with me in it.
Anybody have any advice? I’ve been using my moms car for the past 2 weeks and i just need mine now or to sell it…
oww tough one man. Does this car have any sentimental value to you? If not, and you love the design of these cars, sell that lemon and buy another one thats stock and not all modified. Start from scratch. You might have some luck on another teg. You don’t want anymore headaches man! Good luck.
I have another retest on wednesday. I had a fluctuating idle which was due to my pvc vavle being nonexistent. It looks like my car isn’t running as rich anymore but only wednesday will tell, I replaced all the vacuum hoses and stumbled upon my fitv which was rot as well as the hoses so I changed them. Cleaned the iacv and fitv idle is perfect,
HOWEVER,
Before I did all of this me and my mechanic did a compression test on my car, numbers were all between 145 and 150. Pretty good numbers from what I heard. But soon after that I started to blow smoke from the exhaust, I can’t tell if its blue or white. Its a bit dark but not black, and it is white but not supper white. I also remember when we took the spark plugs out to do the compression test there was a tad bit of oil around them, I don’t think I’m losing oil and my coolant is the same, none look mixed.
My question is, what could it be?
I do know that blue=oil, white=coolant, and black=fuel so please don’t come and try to “help” by saying that.
