All right… I am working on replacing some stuff on my 91 LS. I have been contemplating replacing the header but the ones I am looking at put the O2 sensor in a bad location (only monitoring 2 cylinders instead of all 4). I know the answer is to relocate the sensor to the collector just after the oil pan.
My question is pretty simple… does this cause any problems with the 1 wire O2 sensor? I know the 92+ all have the O2 in this location, but they are 4 wire with heating…
I have searched (for about an hour) and read through many threads with varying opinions on headers but can’t find the answer I am looking for… I need to order the header and exhaust soon so I can get the car back out on the road.
You want to keep your single wire O2 sensor where it is, it needs that extra heat. If you want to relocate to the collector you’ll want to do some wiring and install a heated sensor like is stock on 92+.
As far as I’ve seen the aftermarket 90-91 headers have a spot for the O2 sensor which is more upstream and I haven’t heard of this being a problem before. Maybe there’s some more current info on that?
What I have read is some concern because in the 4-2-1 headers in the aftermarket, the O2 sensor is put close to the OEM location which makes it read off of only two cylinders instead of all 4. I have looked at DC Sports and the other “big name” headers and they all have the sensor there as well… I have not spent too much time with my G2 and am just now getting down to business with it.
I see you pop up in a lot of threads with good advice… thanks for the word Colin.
Is your worry based on actual experience or friend of friend experience, or posts you’ve found online? Or is it based just on you thinking it might be an issue and wanting to be careful?
People have been running those aftermarket headers for years and years. The design may not be ideal but as far as I’ve heard there aren’t any problems with that setup. I think if people are going to be that picky about details and being exact then they’re going to be converting to OBD1 and doing a full blown tune w/ something like Hondata or Chrome.
But like I said, that’s just what I gather, if you’ve got some info you ran into that points to the contrary, please, post it. I’m always looking to learn something new.
Definitely neither of those… the only friend I talk to with a G2 regularly has a B16A in his… soooo… that is a WAY different cup of soup.
or posts you’ve found online? Or is it based just on you thinking it might be an issue and wanting to be careful?
These two for sure… I have read some concern about it although I have not read about any real problems… I thought about it a little and thought I would ask for a second opinion before I spent money to convert to the 4 wire and have a bung welded in… I have owned my G2 for at least 10 years now, but I am only now getting around to playing with it some… trying to catch up on a lot of missed info along the way.
OK, that’s pretty much what I figured. Don’t worry about the O2 sensor location, it shouldn’t be a problem, just order your header and install it. If it does turn into a problem then deal with that situation as needed (but you won’t need to).
If for some reason you’re building a motor that requires that level of attention to detail then the answer is not changing your O2 sensor location, it’s upgrading to OBD1 and getting a proper tune.
Definitely nto building a super motor… Hell… my signature on another forum is “91 Integra LS-S… Ebay racer…”
This car is just a toy for me that I really enjoy tinkering with… I actually like playing with this car more than my shiney 07 Civic Si… and as a result, I am trying to sell the Civic.
I just started working on the car again… and I can say that the last two weeks have been great as I get to be stupid on my drive way and in my garage… getting to take the car apart… getting to buy shiney parts… and at the end of it all… I will have something that I enjoy driving… and as my neoon orange wheels for my Civic suggest… I really don’t care what most people think.
Got shipping confirmation on my cat-back and new O2 sensor… waiting on confirmation for my header…
