I need your help...oil leaking

Well, Im looking to pick up a 92 gs with 120k on it. There is oil leaking from between the block and the head. Im assuming its going to need a new head gasket soon. Can you guys give me some advice. Is the leakage there normal, or will it need a repair.

If so how much for labor to replace it

Thanks

dealer head gasket is 65. aftermarket is 35

im currently swapping my head for the first time… quite a task but im slowly preparing for it. im estimating 12 hrs for myself… probably across 3 days or so but im also taking my time to polish stuff.

i dont know exactly how much it should be, but my mom was quoted 400 for her caravan.

no its not normal… so unless you wanna fork out for the repair, have them do it. unfortunately chances are they wont, but will eventually find someone who will buy it anyways.

also, i dont know if anything could be related but with a sign like that id look for other problems as well. good luck

My girlfriends Dodge Stratus has a bad head gasket…and every 2 days we have to put a quart or 2 of oil in it…it has been like that for about months and she still drives the hell out of it…so head gaskets will last a while like that, but not if you redline it all the time…

Not true…

My GF’s EG hatch went thru a headgasket…It was overheating on and off…If u keep drivin the piss outta ur car u mite damage the head etc etc…

And she NEVER redlines it…

are you sure itz the head and the block, or is it the valve cover and the head; our tegs tend to have their cam seal go bad (in front of the distributor) and oil gets all over the head and the block, from the valve cover down on the left side.

I have a feeling thatz what it is…

i think i’m going to have to agree with e-da9. replace some easy stuff first like the topend gaskets in the head yourself–valve cover gasket, cam end seal, spark plug gaskets, valve cover grommet/gaskets. most likely that is your problem. good call max.

Well the engine had been steamed so it was clear to see where the oil was leaking from, between the block and head. Im going to go again and check for coolant in the oil (and vice versa). I can prob pick it up for about 2700 out the door(budget was about 4700), so I can either repair it, or drop in a fresh motor. Ill also compression test it to confirm if it is the head or not.

The only problem is that I am picking it up on monday, but i need to drive from LA to Berkeley (about 370 miles) on thursday. So i dont know if ill be able to get the work done before I leave. Do you think it will hold up for 370 miles at about 75-80 mph?

if your gonna compression test , go ahead and do a cyl leakage test . put shop air into the cyl. and listen for air to be coming out of dipstick tube or take of rad cap and look for bubbles. this test is the shizzle just make sure you have it at tdc for the cyl your checking. if you are positive its at tdc listen at the intake and exh. for a burnt valve or something that wouldn’t be sealing properly.

If u suspect its the head gasket…u definitely have to fix it before u get it back down…however oil tends to sit right between the head and block on our cars even if the leak occurs somewhere else. The leak might not be visual is what I am trying to say…it can very well leak from the cam gear side of the cam seals and you wont be able to c it since the timing belt cover is there.

A compression test would definitely help…and if u determine that its really the head gasket, I would not pay $2700 for it. replacing head gasket can add up fast…most shops when they do head gaskets they replace EVERYTHING. The labor is where its gonna get u. It takes me about 6 hours to replace only the head gasket.
