Idle Problem.

I have been trying to find the problem with my da and have come up with nothing. When I start it up, it will take a few seconds to start, and when it finally does it will run at about 200 RPM then pick up to about 1500. When I hit the gas petal the RPM’s will drop and almost stall out, then pick up and you can hear it busting up the whole way through. I had another ecu on the car about 2 weeks ago and had the code for fuel system but it went away when I swapped the ecu. The only code I am getting is the VSS code now. I am going to check the codes again tomorrow and try to upload the video so this will make more sense.

does this occur regardless of engine temp? is the problem intermittent? or all the time? does the car have a fitv? have you checked your valve timing? was there any repairs done prior to this, ie what led to this problem? or did it just start happening out of the blue? did it run the same with the other ecm?
transferring all info, descriptively, that you have is key

It only happens when its cold, once it warms up it will idle fine and start like normal. I dont know what you mean by fitv? My timing is dead on. My abd a couple of buddies changed thd timing belt a couple of months ago and made sure it was all lined up. It was bogging down a little bit but not this bad b4 we did the timing and after it was great. The only reason i swapped out the ecu is because it was throwing the code for the fuel system (still didmt run like this) After some research and questions i was told to swap the ecu and see if the code is still on. When i did that it hasnt come back on.

I got the video to upload and the only reason it didnt take a min to start this time is because i just got home and it wasnt completly cold.

fitv: fast idle thermal valve. it’s probably stuck shut, not allowing the extra air needed for cold starts. with the engine cold, pull the air cleaner boot off. you’ll have two ports in the throttle body bore. the upper is the iacv. the lower is the fitv. have someone start the engine and maintain idle so it doesn’t stall. place your finger over the fitv port in the throttle bore. you should feel suction. if you don’t, the fitv is stuck or faulty
post your results

it’s either that or a bad ect sensor. the fitv is the more common failure though. so we start there

Idling problems on our cars are usually due to the FITV or the IACV. If that isn’t your problem, also look into replacing the oxygen sensor, could be that the sensor heater has failed causing it to run rough when cold. i had bogging down issues on my car and it turned out to be the oxygen sensor. Worth looking into for an easy $30ish fix, and if it’s old you should probably replace it anyway. Another thing to consider is the condition of your vacuum hoses, especially the ones going to the MAP sensor.

Ok sorry its been a little while since i posted. I just put my finger over the port for the fitv and also did it to the one for iac and both have good suction. The car started to idel down as soon as i covered either hole. Im still at a loss on this one. Any other advice

check your ect sensor. it should read high resistance cold. like 10Kohms. low resistance hot. like 100 ohms. ballpark numbers, but you get the idea

Where/what is the etc sensor? Also did some more work on it sunday night at 1am, the dam injectors started dumping out fuel from the rail so had to change em out with some extra ones a buddy had. When i was doing that he checked a few vaccume lines and advanced the timing some, it ran alot better for a min but the idle went back to bouncing as soon as i got home.

why would he advance the timing? was it too far retarded? did he set it in base timng mode? when you’re trying to hunt down a problem, you don’t screw with other components. otherwise you just cause more problems. you test to find the problem, then you repair it.
the ect sensor=engine coolant temp sensor. two pin sensor connector. should be located under the distributor

Ill check that tomorrow. We set it in base timing mode and just tried to adjust it to see if it would help any. It was a little retarded when we were looking at it that night
