My co-worker came up with idea to use as a form of security for my car. He said maybe I could wire up a magnetic switch similar too whats used on a home security system on the windows and doors. Since the switch is actuated with a magnet I would mount the switch as an interrupt and use a magnet to actuated the switch allowing the connection to be complete. But without the magnet they can’t even push start your car. The switch would be mounted out of sight obviously.
So let me kknow what you guys think, especially you Fcm !
Depends what wires you are putting the magnet switch on. If its for the ignition switch part of the “Start” function of the ignition key and barrel, the car can still be push started. That wire also carries a good amount of amps so getting the amp rating of your magnet would be important.
I did this on my car a bunch of years ago. I built a circuit that disables the fuel pump. Won’t say where I hid the reed switch. It’s pretty sneaky.
No one’s tried to steal my car, so I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of something like this in preventing a talented, experienced, and determined thief from making off with your car.
The instructions are in the link I provided. No schematic. You’ll have to sketch that out yourself, which is easy enough to do by reading through the description of the circuit. Basically, the circuit is just a real basic circuit that powers up a relay when the car is running (and the relay in turn provides power to something that is necessary for the car to run–fuel pump, ignition circuit, etc etc). Turn the car off, and the circuit goes away (collapses). So Mr. Thief has hard time getting car to start cuz he doesn’t know where hidden switch is.
No start interupt is really worth sh… when you can just jump the starter. The fuel interupt is better if done properly, but there are better ways of making a kill switch. Get a helms and use your creativity.
I like the idea of making a jumper plug similar to the removable chips put in some cars.
Thats why I would like to do a ignition kill and not starter. I’m sure they push started my car when they stole it 3 weeks ago. But If they use a shaved key or screwdriver to turn the ignition they won’t get any power to prime the fuel pump or ignition power with a ignition kill.
Yea ! It was found about block away from my house parked in a vacant house driveway. They took my Kenwood(forgot to take the face off), amp, speaker box w/12’s, shift knob, and AEM intake. Now my Teg stays in the garage and I won’t put my new stereo in until I get my alarm.
Yea sorry I didn’t notice that link last night, not to bad of an idea. What I was saying is to use a plug jumper similar to the injector plug on the passenger side of our odb1 harness. You install a plug inline on a number of your choice of wires with random arrangement and the dummy plug just ties the correct circuits back together. Of course it helps if you extend the wires with the same color wiring and make it clean enough not to be traced.
