Inner Cv Boot Majorly Busted...help

SO i was up under my teg the other day and noticed a bunch of grease all over my alternator, oil pan, etc. i looked and looked and noticed the inner boot was busted all the way around!, now i remember when my outer boot was busted after a while it started clickin and knockin real bad just driving normal, not just turning it would do it, so will this also happen with the inner or is it a different setup inside the boot, i dont know, but i just got my right side replaced, damn

dude, seems like your teg needs some help. the whole shebang needs to be replaced, cv joints come with the axle, did mine last summer for around $60 bucks plus core charge. took about an hour then, but just did both of my buddies del sol axles in an hour and a half. lemme know if ya need specifics

$60 for the parts plus core?..i dont think i can get it for that price…i still need to buy a new manual for my teg since i left it in my bros stolen civic…what did u really have to to do switch it?

it’s not too hard really. before you begin, ask yourself does this sort of thing scare you? if not then it is not too bad. major tools are a ball joint puller, big sledge hammer, big pry bar, and basic hand tools.
i’ll try to email you soon if you need specifics.

later, bryan

where do u get a remanufactured axle that is reliable?
thanks

i don’t think the $60 ones are very reliable…you can get the cheap ones at places like discount auto and auto zone and other auto parts stores…but its not recommened

How much do Acura ones come out too?

Stew

Hey lowntegra:

I would appreciate a copy of your e-mail. I am into a major suspension upgrade and have much of the suspension apart for brakes and shocks. The right axle outside boot has a small crack and I am thinking I would replace it while I am at it instead of putting it all back together and then having it break. The left axle is ok. It was replace about a year ago. Would appreciate any advice. Have a manual for there is no substitute for experience and I have never done an axle on a FWD vehicle. My e-mail is:

Roger.OBanion@sympatico.ca

for my right axle i paid around $500 bucks, ridiculous, now i need the other side cuz my inner one is busted,

i know that when an outer cv boot is busted after a while it will start making a clicking noise and if not fixed soon the axle will break is what ive heard, but does this go for the inner one as well since not as much stress is on tha one, can i go for a while and leave it alone ?

i’ve heard that u can just replace the boot as long as the axle is not making that ticking noise yet when turning. much cheaper in that case.

is replacing the cv boot ok as long as there’s no ticking yet?

TIA

if you check your CV boot like every day, and you notice one day that it finally ripped, then yes, replace the boot only. But if you have grease everywhere, and you don’t know how long it’s been broken, you better change it. First of all you’ve already lost a bunch of lubricant from the CV joint, so it’s probably not a good thing, and you might have a lot of dust rocks crap **** just rubbing inside the joint, that’ll eventually force you to replace the axel anyway.

If you have a lowered car, cv boots will break all the time, mostly because it’s going to always be crunched a bit since the axel sits at an angle from stock where the boot would be straight. Just be sure to check your CV boots A LOT! maybe make a checklist of things to check on your car every saturday, and put cv boots in there.

THANKS BLIZZARD

preciate the info

I am going to replace the entire axle assembly. A new boot is about $25 Cdn and then you have to disassemble the CV joint to get it on. Then its still the original axle with 95K miles. A new axle complete is only $119 Cdn so I am with the whole thing. That is only about $70 US for the part.

good idea dude. i am speaking from experience, as i was coming home from boston, somewhere in rhode island on 95. right cv joint completely exploded, rendering my ride immobile. scary as hell doing 70 then your car veers to one side of the road. almost caused an accident. thank god it didnt. replace that sucker asap.
