so my wifes 94 LS( i know its not a g2 =P) automatic with only 144,000 original miles. timing belt snapped… i know more than likely the valves are bent… but i know their are SUPER rare occasions when none of the valves get bent and you simply put on a new belt set TDC (top dead center) and your back on the road… that’s what im hoping for lol.
so my question is how do i go about setting TDC? do i set the crank first? the exhaust cam is pointing at 10 o’clock… and the intake cam is pointing at 4 o’clock. do i just manually turn both cam’s and set them at 12 o clock TDC? which should i set first? the cams or the crank? i just want to set tdc and install a new belt and do a compression test… and then see if i will need to have the head rebuilt… thank you in advance. - will
Doesn’t matter what order you align the cams and crank, Just as long as the hash marks on your cams are lined up and pointing at each other and the “UP” arrows correspondingly point up(B18C1 “UP” arrows will point slightly forward, not sure if LS is the same).
and your pulley TDC mark (white dot/gouge in the pulley flange) is lined up with the 0* TDC indicator on the timing cover.
Once those are lined up, install the belt.
Sorry, I only have pictures from my GSR. Although I’m pretty certain VTEC and Non-VTEC timing set-up is the same.
actually with B18s is more often than not the engine’s perfectly fine. Snapped a belt in my old integra and the shop threw one on like nothing happened.
seriously though, search this forum for timing belts and you will be hard pressed to find one that resulted in engine damage (i know there is one damaged engine thread out there…but several okay engine threads).
Ls engines have considerably lower compression. Risk of damage is, as mentioned, FAR FAR lower than their VTEC counterparts as a result of the greater valve/piston clearance.
