And 7 day waiting period is up. Just wanted to introduce myself, I’ve been lurking around the site for a while and finally decided to join up. I call this a progress thread, as it doesn’t really qualify for a build yet, nor is it what I would call a full restore so hence the progress thread. These pics happen over about 3 years. I move slow lol Anyways here I go…
Here she is when I first got her
Bone stock, nothing done to her save for the clear corners (and those don’t really count)
Fast forward a little bit, had an accident, so she sat up for a while
Finally I got motivated to fix her, so I started with what I had lying around and I painted some rims I had and lined 'em up for a test fit
Installed some ebay headlights. These will be used in a future hid retro
Then decided to start tackling the body. Lots of little surface rust spots and i needed to have a couple of patches welded in (friend took care of that). Be easy on my work, I haven’t done hardly any bodywork before. I know there’s a few spots that could be done better and others that need to be aligned better. This teggy is a long term hobby/educational project for me.
Then shaved keyhole and antenna
my “custom” trunk prop
Couldn’t post everything on the first one lol
Interior is in pretty good shape except for all the dust
And as she sits
And that’s the timeline so far. Sorry for all the pics. Lots of future plans (especially suspension and hopefully an engine rebuild/swap next summer). By the end of this summer she’ll be all show and no go. But one thing at a time, still lots shit to do before she even gets paint. Just proud of what i’ve been able to accomplish and to say I did it myself (save for the welding lol). It’s a good feeling look back on your work at the end of the day and see what you’re own hands can accomplish. Especially when you’re a noob to doing the actual work (theory only gets you so far). Hit me up with the comments. The good, the bad and the ugly. Criticisms (preferably constructive) or tips welcome
Damn you canadians and your manual seatbelts lol
How is the light output with those ebay headlights?
i hope you sanded/grind-ed the rust before you sprayed, just so the cancer doesn’t come back.
next upgrade look to replacing your rotors with cross drilled slotted and some half decent brake pads and while your doing the braking system mine as well throw some new brake lines.

Craptacular. I’ve even got silverstars in there. I mean it’s not bad, but definately not an upgrade from stock
Definately. From all the research I did, I know enough to do that. Welds were grinded down, then sanded before primed.

I’ve actually got a seized front driver caliper, so as such I’m looking to do an upgrade there (legend upgrade maybe?) cash depending. If I can’t find a good deal, I’ll just go stock again for now. My main priorities right now are to get it healthy enough to make a good platform for future builds (no sense doing all these upgrades and such if the body is just going to rust out on me), and to get it on the road. I haven’t driven it in 2 years and I’m going nuts
Keep 'em coming!
damn 2 years…ummm please do a whole engine fluid flush. Drain P/S fluid…coolant and Oil. Add new fluids. Check your brake fluid. Hows your belts? Run Sea-foam engine treatment through your oil crankcase, fuel, and brake booster line. Do the sea-foam before you do an oil change. If you never have run sea-foam do your research in these forums and you can find the procedures to doing it the CORRECT way.
Thanks for the tips. Hoses are good, belts need replacing (alt. seized up so that didn’t do that belt much good, belt needed replacing anyways). Definately going to change all fluids. I’ll check up on Seafoam for sure. Any other additives (to use a broad term) or anything that you might recommend to run in there to help things whereas it was sitting for so long?
So many little things that need to be done it all just adds up (the joys of a G2):
- tail light gaskets (going to try to fab something up)
- general maintenance stuff (fuel filter, new plugs, various burned out bulbs, etc…)
- pass. window doesn’t lower
- sunroof won’t open fully
- fuel door cable
- trunk release cable
- exterior and interior door handles are wonky
- bumper lights need changing
- bad ground to starter
- speedo cable
- pass. mirror
- MFR
- hatch shocks need replacing
- pass fender need replacing, it’s buckled somewhat from the accident
- new hood (“rut” about 15 inches long leading to where windshield was smashed)
- Tires mounted on rims
Reading that list depresses me. No leaks though! Only real major things left are to replace the alternator and driver side caliper, thank God. I just can’t wait for that first day she gets to hit the road. The daily driver (automatic 2002 corolla) is killing me
that quite a list of ToDo’s, but you could knock most of them out in a day.
