Invidia Gemini install (350Z)

It was requested I post up a note regarding the Invidia Gemini I recently put on the Tree Fiddy.

I love it. We had a few hiccups removing the old system (had to cut 1 bolt on each cat; nuts were rusted solid onto them) and as a result I need to hit an exhaust shop probably monday (not sure if anything’s open tomorrow) and have those two bolts replaced, but otherwise, removal was actually pretty straightforward and install of the new system was even easier.

As with any exhaust, it’s always a good idea to lay everything out and make sure you aren’t missing anything. :giggle: a couple nuts and one bolt short. Lowe’s proved useful for that.

The primary reason for replacing anything was that the muffler section had rusted away right at the flange where it connects to the previous pipe once already; had it welded up once and it was starting to separate and get loud and drone-tastic once again. My three main choices after hearing in person and plenty of youtube research were the Invidia Gemini, Motordyne TDX, and the Ark Performance. There was a pretty sizeable price gap between the Gemini and the other two. Motordyne was the highest, and frankly sounds the best. But, as I’m selling the Z once I get a few more things sorted out with it, I’m focused more on bang-for-buck stuff.

Haven’t been through any tunnels yet, but the obvious noise of a leaking exhaust is gone. I was, in all honesty, a bit worried driving home from the friend’s house where we did the install, because I caught smoke out the back end and obvious burning smell. Then I recalled that there was a residue inside the pipes and figured it was just that burning off. It went away after a few miles of driving.

No real butt dyno impressions, because it’s an exhaust, and that’s all that’s been done to the engine/car other than wheels/tires and new (OE) brakes. Typically on the 2006, the most common “first” engine modifications are the MREV2 plenum, a spacer, and exhaust, with maybe a K&N filter (the intake itself is actually sought after by those with 03-05Z’s and all non-HR G35’s as a budget upgrade, and an aftermarket intake rarely if ever makes any power; most will cause a power drop over most of the powerband with just a tiny little increase right at peak because they’re poorly designed), and then a tune. Since I’m just doing the exhaust, no tune will be done. So I don’t know if it made power. I wouldn’t be surprised if it did free up a few ponies, but it’s not enough anyone’s gonna notice.

From what I heard of it idling after we got it all installed and I was letting it warm up before getting off the ramps and doing a quick test run, I dig it. Lots.

Anywho.

Back to playing with guns.

Pix0rz, y0!

:pixstfu:

If I can pull m’self away from Wolfenstein long enough today to snap a shot of the tips, I will.

eta: far too many nazis needed killing. we’ll see if tomorrow’s any different. :giggle:

ETAA: heading to the muffler shop to have the two bitchy cat bolts replaced today, so i’ll get a shot or two if they’ll let me while it’s on the lift.

Wouldn’t let me get anything underneath, but here’s a side shot.

Glad you’re happy with the construction and fitment.

Have kicked around the idea of getting one of their units for the Suby… I know, shoot me.

Very nice, thanks!

My exhaust budget has been reallocated to replace a leaking living room window, so this is definitely a back-burner issue for me now. Still, glad to hear the fitment is good as found a local supplier that can get it for a reasonable price. Though the more research I do the more I’m considering doing the MREV2 & spacer first, as my OEM exhaust is still in good shape.

if i were keeping it, mrev2 and spacer woulda probably gone on at the same time and then a re-flash with uprev or something similar. thankfully the '06 doesn’t need an intake too.

Squeaky shoes. 4k revs. Warm start.

Sounds good! Seems nice and throaty yet mellow at idle. Though I must say, I’ve seen a lot of YouTube exhaust videos and I think you’re either supposed to place the camera so close to the outlet that it distorts the camera mic, or film the clip during a mild windstorm. The side of a busy highway works well in a pinch too.

Yeah I know I was totally off. :giggle:

I’m actually gonna see about borrowing a pard’s GoPro and remote mic to get some actual driving footage. My fenders are sooooooo ugly though. So I might have to point it backwards.

I’m very happy with the sound though.

One of these days I’ll hit the 895 Tunnel under Baltimore Harbor and get on it. That’s the rules right? New exhaust, gotta stomp it in a tunnel?

Believe so. That was my plan, anyway. We’ve even got a brand-spankin’ new tunnel here:

(And no, that’s not my Z, lol)

i don’t get it. there was no exhaust noise…just a 1989 cover of 1975’s “Once Bitten Twice Shy”. Which seems about par for Canada discovering it well into the 21st century. :giggle:

No, our satellite radios are so advanced that we’re actually intercepting transmissions that originated in 1989, bounced off celestial objects, and returned to Earth. It simply took 25 years for them to return. It’s like time travel, really.

“This is so exciting!”
