im trying to think of a way to get a little more power out of my ls so i was thinking about getting an msd ignition system with the §§§§§ cap, external coil and an ignitior box. anyways… would this help or just be a waste of money. if its a good mod then what ignitor box would you recommend?
It’s a waste of money, especially on a stock engine. I’ve seen a lot more people have problems with them than with the stock ignition. I was just talking with someone the other day who had been running a 500whp car on stock ignition with no problems. As long as the ignition is working properly, there is no need to upgrade it, you won’t notice any difference in power by switching to MSD unless you have some crazy forced induction system that actually needs it.
What do you have done to your car so far?
um… im boosted at 8psi. you have to be kidding me because when my friend put on an msd full system on his 3rd gen lude, i totally felt the difference it was way faster
Just because you “feel” the difference, doesn’t mean there is any. People clam to “feel” the difference, but it is mostly just in their head because they expect to. A dyno run would be your best proof.
forgive me, because I have never messed around with an upgraded ignition system, but I highly doubt it gives you more power and you “felt” the extra power in your buddies car. If it made that big of a difference on somewhat stock car, don’t you think everybody would be doing it, or at least there would be more info on it? MSD ignition has been around a long time, so I would think if it made that big of a difference it would be more popular.
its a waste of money. your better off just getting ngk spark plug wires.
8psi shouldn’t have any trouble with the stock ignition. You shouldn’t “feel” any difference unless the stock ignition wasn’t working correctly before. If the car hasn’t been dyno tuned, that’s where I’d put my money.
i am planning to do it, even dyno says it dont bring you extra hp, i think, it smooth out idle, the car takes off faster, accelerate faster. you will feel more firm and solid, i felt that when i put my ngk iridium plugs on.
for those of you thinks most company just claim this and that, or someone on the internet says something is not noticeable, me and my dad both work on my car, sometime he does tell me if he updated something on the teg, when i drive it i always can feel the differences. better oil, tranny oil. new spark plugs, spark plug wires…
the feelings from a car is not just in your mind, IT IS THERE.
i cant believe people say something not worth it without even trying them. if eveybody feel the same way, msd is long gone out of bussiness already. there s a reason msd is the best and most expensive brand in the ignition world, what i heard from the guys running with msd wires, cap, coil, box. they did feel different, cost a lil more, i think it worth it if your old cap coil wires need to be replaced

Replacing worn out spark plugs and wires will probably make you feel a difference in performance, you are right on that. Now, whether you could tell any difference between a brand new regular NGK plug and a brand new NGK Iridium plug would be an entirely different story (and I highly doubt you could).
On Hondas, I most commonly see MSD ignitions on stock engines with a cold air intake. Sometimes I see them on more built cars, but usually they aren’t necessary on a street car. Yes, it’s a popular ignition system, but that doesn’t mean you need it. If you want to spend the money, install the MSD and “feel” the difference in your head OR spend that on something like dyno tuning and actually come up with some quantified results for your money (and probably “feel” a lot more difference as well).
I mean, you can probably “feel” more difference in your car by doing a routine oil change and tune up or running a bottle of fuel system cleaner through your car than by switching to a different ignition system.
waste of money, making 400whp with oem. i had the msd on before and my builder took it off saying its garbage
well, it does make you idle better, and im also getting the 6al ignitor box so i can adjust the rev limiter. i want to set the rev limiter at like 6500
Based on your comments, it sounds like your car is not tuned, which is the first thing you need to do with a turbo setup. I guess if you aren’t tuned and are running a little rich, it might help to ignite a little extra fuel since some of the MSD setups fire the spark more than once, but that’s not really solving your problem or going to make it run that much smoother. Go to your local tuning shop and have them install a chip with whatever their preferred tuning software is and put it on a dyno and have it tuned. It will not only idle better but run better at all RPMs and make more power. They can also set the rev limiter exactly where it needs to be (right where the power starts to drop off) without using a MSD box. I spent about $300 having my B20 tuned instead of wasting money on a fuel pressure regulator or MSD or any other unnecessary parts, and it runs better than most people’s stock engines and makes more power because it was tuned properly.
^^ agree
why would you ask a question and then disregard everyone’s answers? you should have just bought the thing and installed it…
x2 makes a lot more sense
