alright, i have been lookin into a jdm b18c-r swap. i have a few basic questions about the motor itself. i want to run it obd-1, and i have some questions about that also.
i’ll start with my basic questions about the motor. I read on all the jdm swap websites, passwordjdm, hmo, etc. two different prices between the 96-97 spec and 98+ spec type r swaps. it is my understanding that the 96-97 had a different transmission final drive. it has the 4.4 final drive like a b16, and the 98+ has a 4.79 final drive. is this the only difference in the swap? is this the $500 difference in price? i realize that it may be worth it, but im not even using the transmission. im using a cable y1 lsd trans. so thats my first question:
what is the difference between 96-97 itr swap and 98+ spec?
now, to my issue with the obd-1 part. i have an obd-0 integra. how many o2 sensors does an itr use? i have a boomslang conversion harness for obd0-obd1. and it has two sets of 4 wires to run to the engine bay. i believe one set is for the 4-wire o2 sensor, and the other set is for vtec. but what about the second o2 sensor?
what ecu should i chip to run a type r as an obd1 engine?
how many o2 sensors does an itr use?
if i use a p28 will it have the pins for a second o2 sensor?
will i have to run 12 wires into the engine bay? 8 for the two o2 sensors and 4 for vtec
i guess i just need this whole thing explained to me a little bit. i’ve done about 4 swaps before. and once it came to the VTEC part on two of them, i kinda stepped aside for one of my buddies.
Im gonna say this nice because you will probably get some flaming. Have you tried to search for any of those answers? I have the same idea, 98+ spec JDM ITR motor in my 91 but I came up short on answers. Good luck getting some answers, cause my searching didnt quite get them all.
well, i’ve seacrhed and found half of the answers to half of the questions. it was hard to find the answers to my exact questions. i found some about a b18c1, but nothing abuot the b18c5.
I’m a little busy at work so I can’t answer all the questions, but here’s some basic info.
I had a 99 model 98 spec.R swap in my 99 Civic EX. The 98 spec.R has a 4.785 final drive with Helical LSD, vs. the 96 spec.R which had a 4.400 final drive with the same helical LSD. USDM ITR engines (B18C5, which most people assume is a JDM ITR as well, which is a B18C with PR3 head) ITR tranny was also 4.400.
The 96 spec.R had a 4-2-1 header and the 98 spec had the infamous 4-1 with 2.5" collector. The 98 spec used a 36mm axle as well. 98 spec was 11.1:1 compression while USDM was 10.8:1. Also, the valve cover insert on the 98 spec was a faux carbon fiber piece while the 96 spec had a silver one (like the B16B CTR).
sorry dont have much time i just thought i’d ramble down a few specs. hope it helps
B18C is a JDM ITR or a JDM SiR-G (180 ps USDM GSR equivalent). The difference is the head is a PR3 for an ITR (B16 casting) and a P72 for an SiR-G. Also, 98 spec will have a green stripe under the rear of the distributor.
well i know for fact it’ll be a jdm itr swap. not the usdm. my stock integra axles and half shaft will work with this swap right? or is it different for the 98+ ?
EDIT: did a little bit of research and found that the p28 ecu seems to be the most popular for this swap. just gotta find a place to chip it with the correct basemap. its gonna be a stock itr with bolt ons, so that shouldnt be a problem.
does the 4-1 even fit with our crossmembers? i have an aftermarket traction bar that would probably clear it, but if not, is there another company that makes a good 4-1 header for this application?
Heres what you will be using to make your DA OBD1 with that engine:
Use an OBD1 VTEC distributor
Use OBD1 or OBD2 injectors
Use the OBD0-OBD1 conversion harness
Use the 4-wire heated O2 sensor from the ITR engine
Use any OBD1 VTEC ecu. I suggest going to www.phearable.net if you want a chip for your P28 that is tailored for your car.
When you convert to OBD1 you won’t have to use 2 single wire O2 sensors a la OBD0, so don’t worry about needing pinouts in the ECU you end up using. You can chip most OBD1 ECU’s to run DOHC VTEC but the most common and cheapest is the P28. All are created equal once they are chipped.
The only wires you will be running from the engine bay will be for the VTEC solenoid. All other wires are from the conversion harness, and there are instructions on what to do with them. (I’m using the same exact Boomslang harness in my car).
It really doesn’t matter how many O2 sensors the ITR uses becuase you will be using OBD1 and not OBD2. All you will need is a 4-wire O2 sensor that goes in the collector of the header.
Hope I am of help. Good luck with the swap, YOU LUCKY BASTARD.
La Cienega and El Segundo Blvd. Ramada Hotel. I’m staying with a friend who is at a seminar for work, and they gave him a paid suite, so he’s got extra room and I don’t have to drive my ass back to the 909 every day.
I’m going home tonight but I’ll be staying on Wednesday, I’ll hit you up for sure… maybe find a cool spot and shoot some pictures or something.
Word. I live a block off El Segundo blvd on the west side of the city. There are so many industrial areas around for scenery. I haven’t washed my FILTHY ASS CAR for at least a month.
Maybe I’ll wash my car and hopefully the piece of JDM junk I won on ebay will come in. I won a Spoon upper rear strut bar for $60.
I have a queston for you: Do you indulge in HERBAL self-medication?
EDIT: Oh shit I forgot that on Wednesday night I’m going to one of those “focus groups” for some marketing agency in Beverly Hills. They are paying me $125 and giving me munchies to sit in a room and talk for 2 hours. Last week I went to one for the same agency and they gave me $100 for an hour and a half of speaking my mind.
You will be there for more than just Wednesday right?
can i use obd-0 ls injectors and keep the resistor box? what would the disadvantages be with that? on my old 92 rs, i wired up obd-0 injectors with a resistor box to make it run again (long story) but once i did that, it seemed to run good.
well the boomslang harness came with 8 stag wires. four i know are for the o2 sensor. i browsed through the instructions and from what i saw, the other four were for vtec. they were on two different harnesses off of the green one. i hope im making myself clear. maybe i should call boomslang for that one?
I’m 99% sure you can use OBD0 injectors. My cat uses an OBD1 conversion and I still use the injector resistor box, myself.
Ans as far as the 8 wires, 4 are for the O2 sensor, I think 3 are for VTEC solenoid, and I know another is simply a ground wire to check your CEL codes.
That should be all 8 wires, but I’m only 80% sure.
what about the clutch? i plan on using a jdm y1 cable tranny with factory lsd. will i be able to use the oem itr clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate? i’ve heard i need a cable clutch or a cable pressure plate
what type of break in is required for just a new pressure plate?
