I bought this car from a 43 year old guy who took real good care of it. The AC line that goes above the radiator looks like it has been retrofitted for R134 but he said that it was replaced with R12A. <----- Ice Cold!
So, I’m racing a CRX last week and my alternator belt snapped on me. I end up replacing all the belts (alternator, AC, & power steering) but then when I turned on the AC it was making a real loud noise. I pulled all the loose string (which was my belt) out of the compressor and now it’s still making that noise.
I don’t know how long I got before it goes out on me. So when I replace the compressor, what kind of freon should I use? R12A (which I can’t find anywhere), Freeze 12 (synthetic R12) or R134?
As long as the system is vacuumed meaning nothing in there. You’ll be find to use w/e you want.
If you are street racing, you don’t deserve to have AC.
Take it to the track.
Ditto on the street racing.
As far as the AC goes you are better off not trying to fool with it yourself. If the compressor is bad you will need to take it to a shop first to have the coolant (whatever type you have) sucked out and then you can replace the compressor. Don’t try to do this with the system still pressurized as you can really hurt yourself with that crap. If you do still have R12 consider yourself lucky since it is hella expensive for a shop to get and “no” you can’t get it yourself.
Other than a belt or fuse, etc… AC systems are one of the few things I wouldn’t recommend DIY’ing.
